Phone Plans
Hello All time to get on the road again...
Can anyone provide some advice on phone plans? Steph and I will be going full time in May and will be traveling in both Canada and the USA. what is the best phone plan? We use around 400 day time minutes per month and do not require any data (even thought this would be nice), we need call answer (answering machine), and call display.

We use Verizon and have no trouble whatsoever. Our trips so far have been East of the Mississippi tho. I have seen other posts on the forum that have said Verizon seems to get good coverage out West too. They also have a good wifi hotspot too.

Check with Verizon. They have multiple plans, home phone service you can take with you, over 65 discounts, even US & Canada plans. Many options. Good luck.

Phone plans
We have been using Verizon all over the U.S. for years with very good results. They have several good plans, and we use their WiFi hot spot a lot. Good coverage in most places.......Jim

We spend 6 months in Canada and 6 months in USA I am sick and tired of paying for a Canadian plan that I cannot use (competitively) in the USA. For 2011/12 what we use is USA AT&T with the $10.00 International offer and 250 minutes my wife uses the Trac fone. we use Virgin MIFI in the USA $40.00 a month unlimited. When we go back to Canada the best deal I have seen so far is Rogers with their flex plan and up to 15GB for 100.00 plus Canada wide unlimited calling for another 20.00.
My advice do not get sucked into a contract as the deals are always changing and usually getting better, would appreciate any info if you can find a better deal
enjoy

We have been with AT&T for too long now. When we went FT over a year ago we wanted to switch to Verizon, but did not want to buy new phones and commit to a long contract with higher monthly bills.
We mostly travel up and down the west coast and AT&T coverage is good in towns/cities and on interstates, but poor or no signal away from populated areas.
This year we are trying something different. Last month I installed a Wilson cellular truckers antenna and a powered amplifier. Hoping this will solve a no reception problem I am having at certain CG's we like. We don't need it here in SoCal but got to do a small test on the system a couple weeks ago. It seems we had a solar storm that caused a no reception problem for about a day. I turned the amplifier system on and immediately got a full 5 bars of reception! So far so good.

Our plan has 700 anytime minutes, free weekends, free after peak hours and free anytime minutes using AT&T's family cell to cell, costs about $80.00 a month without internet and texting for 2 phones. I can add a data phone/modem plan for an additional $50 per month (5 gig DL limit)

I feel that unlimited data plans are more important than tons of minutes, and that is why we stay with Sprint. They still have true unlimited data with no throttling. You can still get Sprint Unlimited Data Plan for $79.99 monthly. They will give you truly unlimited night and weekend minutes, plus unlimited cell phone minutes to any other cell phone on any other phone carrier's plan, so this plan will fit all of your needs for both phone minutes and computer internet usage.
Other links with good info:
1) Internet Access on the Road
2) PDA Technology
I too recommend the Wilson Cellular booster system. You can be in an area where you don't see any bars on your phone and once you turn on the booster/amplifier system you will often see 4 or 5 bars.
I have been using Sprint for over 15 years and the Wilson Cellular Booster/Amplifier system for over 3 years and highly recommend both.

I have the answer. Sprint Home Connect.
Just plug it up. Then plug up any phone. It is its own transmitter/receiver. It does not have to be in the old phone connection. It just needs 110 power. It has a battery for backup that can standby for about 8 hours or 2 hours talking. I think the old rotary phones might be best. Take the a campground, the park plug it in a the pool. It doesn't use WiFi. As long as it has a signal. It works. I got mine free when I upgraded to a new contract, plus doing so saved me $100. The monthly service is $20 a month. I can't say how long these prices will be in affect.
