Joe - I am not am expert - but I am with someone now who has asked them personally in SD about getting the Concealed Carry with PMB. You have to be able to show you have been in SD 30 days - just like the 1 night in a hotel or RV Park to get your Drivers License, voter registration, etc with the PMB.

And I asked at Cabellas in Mitchell SD and they would sell me whatever I wanted with a PMB.

We are going to make SD our domicile once we sell our house in NY this May 2017. We currently have NY CDLS and pistol permits. We are planning on registering our vehicles when we sign up for America's Mailbox once the house sells. We still have to stay in NY until 2018 for work, but will be living full time in the RV. We are willing to fly out and stay the one day to get our CDLS transferred to SD but cannot do the 30 day instate stay for the pistol permits until we retire. Does anyone know if there is a time limit when you have to transfer/re-register your pistol permits?

Bill & Laura, FWIW we obtained ccw permit in FL. FL has most state reciprocal agreements of any state and includes SD. Had to take 2 hour training course, submit certificate and sign up and pay. That was it 2 years ago.

Been a while since I bought a gun, but last time I did was in Washington State and I don't recall any problems (.357 magnum revolver). I didn't know there was a residency problem for buying a gun - in western states at least.

I've also bought hand guns through Craigslist or Giant Nickel and had zero problems that way (again in Washington State).

Assuming you pass any background checks, do you have to reside in the state where you buy a hand gun?

If your NY Ccw is only for residents, if you move your resident to SD it is possible that your NY ccw would no longer be valid. If having a valid ccw is important to you, you may wish to rethink your plans.

Oh, and on reciprocal agreements. I have a Washington State concealed carry permit. Is there a website or somewhere to find out if this permit is honored in other states? Also, would already having a carry permit in Washington help get one in SD once I become a resident?

Nope. You still have to reside in the state for 30 days before applying. You fill the paperwork out and in five days return to the sheriff's office when they will take your picture and issue you a temporary permit. Paperwork is then sent to Pierre where the permit is signed by the governor and thrn returned to you.

One other thing to be aware of is, the 30 day stay and address has to be in the same county you are trying to get the ccw permit in.

I have WA (home state), OR and UT permits. Not full timing but getting prepared for it. No income tax in WA and I've already paid the sales/use tax on what I own. So far it looks like I'll stay a WA resident.

Hopefully this will all be changed in the next 100 days. CCW to be good in every state, like your drivers license. Cars are much more dangerous, by the ways.

I know this isn't addressing the specific question you asked, but since you are going to continue living and working in New York after you sell your house, won't New York still consider you residents?

Bill, I had America's Mailbox at one time. They tend to nickle-dime you to death. You will always get long emails full of legal stuff. I am now with Your Best Address in Sioux Falls. Great folks, no hidden coasts and very reliable service. What you see is what you get. I pay an annual fee for the box (a backers dozen if payed up front) and postage. Simply keep you postage account over $50. Junk mail is thrown out for you.

Happy trails,
Rick Y
