Sleeping and outside noises
Hello. My husband and I are in the planning stages of full time RVing. We are curious about outside noises and sleeping. Are you able to hear everything and if so, what do you all do to help that?

Would really depend on your rig, and where you are set up. We seldom hear any outside noise in our coach, but I spent twenty years on submarines so I can sleep through anything. Experiences will vary.
Rent a couple of RV's and go to the type of places you wish to visit. that will give you the best idea of what to expect.

I use ear plugs if in a noisy place or if the furnace will be running. I rarely stay at an RV park and tend to avoid state/national parks. Dispersed is my usual camp "site".

We always sleep with a fan on in the bedroom. When in the RV we just set the overhead air conditioner fan to always run, that works for us.
Yes, noises from outside get in to an RV with more ease than they do at a house. RV walls are thinner, there is only so much noise they can stop.

Your brain learns to block out noises that are somewhat constants, like road noise, railroad tracks, airports, etc. Since you will find yourselves near them often, you'll get use to it. Plus, if you've been out exploring, you'll find that your drop off rather quickly. Now, the guy close by who has to 'warm up' his big dully PU at 6:00 am to 'get an early start', that I've never gotten use to!

We've began sleeping with a sound machine in the sticks and bricks before we started rv'ing. Now we can't sleep without it and it blocks a lot of the outside noises, but not all. There are a number of phone apps that provide various white noises. The best one I have found is called "relax melodies". We use a combo of "rain" and "river".

YES, I'm a very light sleeper. We run a small space heater that I modified so that the fan runs all the time.

That's about right. Considering we used to live on acreage out in the country where it was dead quiet, that's saying something.
When things get particularly loud or annoying, the little foam earplugs work great. Still, we've only used those less than ten nights in over two years. And if it gets really bad...well, you've got wheels.

We had a very soundproof RV and really didn't hear much outside. Doublepane windows helps.
Most of it just depends on where you park. If you're at a RV park in summer with families you'll hear noise. Friday nights when folks pull in for the weekend you'll hear noise past quiet time. They're hyper. Saturday night they're exhausted from all day activity so it's more quiet. It can depend if rules are enforced, also.
National parks tend to be quieter because everyone is out touring/hiking all day and they're tired when they return.
Even running the Fantastic ceiling fan on low will help.

There are some noises you'll hear, and others that you won't. As others have said, your location will determine what you'll hear. If you are camping near an airport, you'll hear planes all day and all night until you block them out. That comes with the territory. Staying in a family oriented campground will yield the sounds of kids and teenagers talking and playing well into the night. Dispersed camping will yield birds and squirrels and frogs and crickets/cicadas and coyotes at night.
For me, the blower on the AC drowns all those noises out.

We run the rear AC/heat pump so the early morning diesel pickups and fisherman do not wake us.

I was just talking with my wife about this. You said you were in the planning stages of full timing.
Have you ever spent any time in an RV? If not, maybe part of your planning should be renting or borrowing an RV and spending some time in one to see what kind of noise levels there are at night.
