Texas as domicile state

If your already paying the Washington vehicle tax on your purchase why would you change to TX ? I’m from Oregon but the only negative about moving to my sons address in Washington was the outrageous Washington tax collected with the tags. If you don’t own property there what’s the downside with Washington’s 0 income tax . Just curious as we would have preferred the easy way. My sister lives in TX but we decided FL was a better tax choice for us to domicile.
Good luck with whatever your move is .. congratulations!

Even though I would get some senior and homestead exemptions on my TX house, WA works out to be a little less expensive with vehicle registration. Sales Tax is about the same. Property Tax is less in WA.

If I were to buy a new Prevost, I would have to start shopping for a new domicile.

If you live in one of the big three counties around Puget Sound there is a transportation "fee" added to your car registration which is huge. In my case, it added about $1,200 to my annual coach tabs and a few hundred additional dollars for my car tabs.

I didn't do a property tax comparison between Washington and Texas as I do not plan on buying real estate there. However, property taxes in Washington skyrocketed over the last 10 years with no end in sight. Like more than doubled.

I fear I may have hijacked this thread from the original poster, even though we have been talking to same issues.

My apologies

Both Dave and I grew up in the Seattle area, met at Western, and had always said we would return. In 2006 when we went full-time, we looked at "moving" to my sister's place in Mill Creek (north side of Seattle) until we did the calculations on registering the coach! Since we were already Texas residents it was a no-brainer for us to stay Texas residence.

I'd say the approximately 1K a year difference between Texas and Washington tag cost would be a very good reason to 'move'.

BTW - you aren't hijacking the thread. You are adding to it - that's the way threads go, you learn from all of the different viewpoints that are brought out for discussion.

Can be a big difference in fees East & West side of WA. Even the County can make a difference.

Unlike Texas, Washington doesn't recognize the address at a mail forwarder to be a legal address for licensing purposes. So in most cases you need to have someone you know agree to have you 'live' with them while you travel. All the people we knew at the time lived in the greater Seattle area.

You can renew by mail. Just did that last year. You have to get one form notarized that says you are driving an RV, hence the enhanced DL.

The DPS has change some requirements over the last year with the COVID issues. We renewed our Class A license early last year and could only do this in person at a DPS license center.

DPS website still lists to steps mail renewal for out-of-state renewal.

Next you will tell people that no, Washington isn't located next to Alaska like the local weatherman shows each night on TV. And when you say there is a country in between, over 1/2 will get a blank look on their face1 When we first got married in '66 and moved to Ohio, we quickly learned to say Seattle, because if we said Washington when asked where we came from, everyone thought DC.
