Texas Driver's License Class A Motorhome

We will be hitting the road full time in September. After looking at all the pro's and con's, we chose to domicile in Texas.

It seems that we neeed to registere our vehicles and insure them with the new Texas address. We will be using the Escapee's address in Livingston Texas.

I've seen some information pertaining to needing a special class license for our 52k pound Class A. Has anyone needed to do this? I've seen some posts that say you have to take a written and road test, including parallel parking, in order to obtain the license.

We were planning on spending a few nights in Livingston area to do registrations and insurance, but if a road test is needed for the license, it would seem that might get scheduled weeks out.

Does anyone have experience with this?

TIA!

AJ

You have to take a written and a road test for your class A given the weight. Long pole in tent is getting both scheduled. Make sure on the written test you tell them you’re applying for a commercial bus license. Otherwise they’ll give you the semi truck test. Road test is a piece of cake. About 10 minutes. No parallel parking or backing. Mostly on city streets making a few turns. You’re right about scheduling the road test. Can’t do it until you successfully pass written. My experience was it was about a 3 month process from start to finish. Fortunately when I moved to Florida they just transferred my license. Nothin was easy in Texas dmv.

I didn't have to parallel park, but a written test along with a driving test is required. I have seen it mentioned that an air brake test is required, but I didn't have to perform one. You will end up with a Class B license allowing you to drive a vehicle over 26,000 lbs.
Best of luck!

Livingston is a good spot to get your license. This area is used to dealing with individuals getting license to drive their RVs.

There is another discussion ongoing right now here: https://www.irv2.com/forums/f59/how-...as-667231.html

Don't ask for a commercial bus license, specify you want a Class B Operators License otherwise you will be issued a CDL which you do not want. In Texas the test is the same for semi or motorhome, all from Chapter 14 of the Texas Driver's Handbook. Here is also a handy Study Guide for the test. Whether you have to back or parallel park is totally up to the examiner. In my case I had to do both, but it was back in a straight line and park with the right wheels next to the curb on a long open street.

That would be worth a call to the DMV. Generally licenses from out of state are recognized for transfer if they are of like kind. It may depend on what the requirements are for the NY license.

Well, I think what I am going to do is just get the endorsement in NYS now, before hitting the road full time, and hope Texas accepts without having to do another road test. I will call Texas as well, but I think this is the best option at this point.

If anyone is looking for the NYS information (it's not on their web site):

"Client must complete MV-44 and provide Proof of Identification. They will be issued a paper temporary Permit (MV-148) in the same class as they currently hold. The cost is a $10.00 permit fee. This allows the client to take two skills tests. The client DOES NOT take a written test. The client will have to take and pass a 15 minute road test in order to get the "R" endorsement added to their license. The test cannot be scheduled using the automated road test system because it is a non-computerized paper permit. The client must schedule their road test through T&I (Testing and Investigations)."

Thanks again everyone for the assistance.

Escapees in Livingston Texas can give you all the correct information you need. It would be best to contact them as sometimes the information on forums is incorrect. They deal with your questions on a daily basis.
