For the RGV, I usually think about it in November for arrival after Christmas/ New Years One year it was in January for a couple weeks advance notice after things for Florida weren't working out. I typically don't head someplace without a reservation unless I'm boondocking in AZ.

Get off the beaten path in Texas

We have been in South Texas since first week in December. Great weather until this week mostly with sunny skies and in the mid 70’s.

I didn’t know RockPort/Portland area had so many snowbirds until I had to go pick something up down there recently. Seems rather barren and quite frankly crowded with RV parks and new housing subdivisions everywhere.

To the original poster traveling in the 1993 Class C, take Highway 16 through Poteet south of San Antonio and head towards Hebbronville, Tx. You will go through a dozen tiny rural towns most with tiny rv parks that are incredibly cheap. Don’t expect to see any KOA with camp hosts running around in golf carts or other snowbirds. It is mostly rural Texmex ranch towns with very friendly people and no “Hottie-totties” anywhere.

We’re staying in Sleepy Valley RV Resort this winter in Mission TX. Take your pick of sites this year because most of the Canadians couldn’t come. Inexpensive place to stay (around $400. a month) but $299. a month for first month this year. Some activities still going on. Cold this week but it is cold everywhere this week. Pool is heated! Mission has everything you need and 90 minute drive gets you to S. Padre Island for fishing without the corrosion and high prices.

Last year we tried the Q area and also thought it was cooler than expected. Phoenix was only a little warmer.
We noticed the higher temps in Yuma but when we got there in late February RV parks were full but there were boondocking areas available.
This year we came early and were able to easily get into a park due to Covid keeping the Canadians home.
We got here in December and it's been beautiful.

Go to Mexico if you want to get more for your money. Specifically Baja if you like fishing. A friend of ours is in Loreto since January and he’s having a great time. Don’t let fear mongers stop you, most of them have no clue.

Gosh--driving in Mexico with a nice motor home and all the outward "trappings" of a "rich gringo".....what could possibly go wrong--no thanks!

Come to Texas

Come on down! We're in San Antonio and it's currently 15 degrees with 2" of snow on the ground. Winter wonderland! Why leave miserable Minnesota for miserable Texas? Huddle up and cuddle up with a warm friend.
The nice part is that it'll be in the 70's in a week.

Completely agree. Even at the fly-in hotspots they tell you not to venture outside the resorts or tourist areas...

We spend Jan & Feb in Mission, TX. Absolutely love it. So much to do and shopping as good as any large town we've lived in (Tampa/St. Pete). We are very near a state park and ride bikes through it often. Most of the nicer parks have entertainment in weekly for free. Ton's of cheap if your into that. Some parks have wood shops. Check the parks from So. Padre to Mission. There are so many and I'm sure you can find one to meet your needs. The park we stay at even has a private gun range.

Winter in Texas

Thanks, y’all for your responses to where to stay in the Mission, TX area. We came down to get warmer than New Braunfels was going to be. Arrived in Canyon Lake RV Park on Feb 11. It has been freezing, but at least no snow. This park is nice with a nice lake. We attended a fun Valentine Dance.... never have I had to dance with a mask on.... but haven’t met very many folks because we are all hunkered down. It is a nice area, though and hope to see better weather before Sat when we move on to Victoria.
