We're in Livingston, TX and as of about 12:30 local time, we're Texans. We flew into Houston last night and left for Livingston about 7:30 am this morning. We our new insurance office, Allstate agent Johnny Evett, and they were terrific. We signed a few docs and that was that.

Then we drove over to the Polk County Tax Office. Weren't in there ten minutes and we had Texas plates for our Jeep. We forgot to get the packet for mailing in our motorhome info so we had to go back but no biggie. Super fast service. Walked right up at about 9:30 am and got it all done without a hitch.

Then we headed over to the DPS office in Livingston to get our drivers licenses...but they were closed! Flood damage from hurricane Harvey. Another gentleman had gone in the jail to ask what was up and they told him the office would be open in about a week. So we headed to Cleveland.

There were people waiting outside the office in Cleveland and we took a number. We were #76 and they were in the mid-forties.

We were sure we'd be there all day but it was only about 90 minutes later and they called our number. The gal there was super helpful. We had all our docs in order and she didn't bat an eyelash except to ask us if there were a lot of apartments over on Rainbow Drive

We explained what the deal was.

Took us just short of two hours to get our DL and considering not only Livingston's DL office is closed but so was Woodville's, that's not bad. So in 3 hours, including a 30 minute drive to Cleveland, we got our Texas registration and drivers licenses. No problems at all. We read their websites, had all our documents in order and it was that easy.

Thanks everyone for your help and understanding as we prepared for this. Our mild and admittedly irrational fears were unfounded. And we went over to Escapees after lunch at Patron in Livingston, got a short tour of the mail facility and checked the campground out. So when anyone asked if we've seen our new "home" we can say yes

We have been members for about four years with the Livingston escapees. The folks over there have gone above and beyond to help us anytime we needed it. Great service all around!

Lived in TX since 1988. If you don't live in a major metro area, TX gov't agencies are friendly and fast. We now live in Sherman (pop.35k). Usually just walk up to a window, clerks are helpful.

OK Now that you are TEXANS start shopping for a western hat and don't be afraid to try on some boots. And of course a big buckle belt, snap button western shirt and string tie.Welcome!

There are a lot of boot stores here.

Doesnt say what your rig is but if over 26,000 lbs and or air brakes you better read about non commercial class B required for motorhomes in texas.

No, you're not a Texan. You weren't born here. Neither was I and I've lived in Texas since 1978. I'm not a Texan. I just live here.

Nope, we've got a gasser on order that will weigh 24,000 lbs

Welcome to Texas. Glad to have you. Did you get a chance to dine at El Patron's while you were in Livingston? It gets you acquainted with TexMex and excellent house margaritas.

Yes! We loved it and we wish we could go back. Had lunch there and it was amazing. But the next day we tried the Pit Row Pit Stop Diner. Another great meal and the diner's decor is a lot of fun. Staff was very friendly at both places and the owner came out at Pit Stop and greeted us. We really liked Livingston.

On another note:
My condolences -------- I wouldn't wish the label of Texan on anyone.

Fortunate part is you are just 'domiciled' there

We are only domiciled there. We're Nevadans at heart and always will be. But in reality, we're nomads and don't really identify with any state. They all have their pros and cons. If we manage to find the perfect state, we'll settle down there immediately. Don't expect to be settling down anytime soon
