Battery Monitor Shunt - Will it get hot?

Getting ready to install a Victron Battery Monitor. Am installing it in a battery box on the tongue of my toyhauler that is not waterproof, so I need to enclose it in a junction box.

Question: Do I need to worry about a battery shunt creating heat?

I've never noticed mine getting hot, but then again I'm nowhere near the upper current limit on it. I'm sure if you were using an inverter to power a toaster or pushing it towards its operating limit that may be different though.

I wouldn't think that it would get any warmer than the cables connecting to it, since it is carrying the same current as the cables. Important to remember that the shunt goes on the negative side of the battery bank, and there should be nothing connected between the shunt and the battery bank or you won't get an accurate reading.

My personal opinion on this (not that I'm an expert, just another Victron fan), is that if you're using a junction box that is large enough and which provides some air space around the shunt, things should be good.

Victron has great tech support, and every time I've called I've been able to talk to a real person in a short amount of time. Perhaps calling them directly and asking what the requirements are for mounting the shunt you'd get a more specific answer. I've checked the install manual and see nothing mentioned about the shunt regarding installation locations, so this would be something I'd run past tech support.

What you really need is a https://www.amazon.com/WLanParts-Enc...tronics&sr=1-2

NEMA enclosure which is weather proof and easily opened. That one may not be the right size. But Amazon or your local electrical supplier has plenty of others.

The shunt will get warm under full load but not hot. It can easily be placed in a plastic box. A 400a 50mv shunt will produce 20 watts of heat while carrying 400 amps. At 100 amps only 1.5 watt of heat would be produced. Chances are that your battery bank would be depleted long before the heat from the shunt would be an issue

I shoot all my wiring with an ir gun every month or so, and look for hot spots.
Shunt remains the same temp as the wiring around it, ambient or very close to it.

OP here. Thanks for the info. Will finish the job easier than having to worry about heat!

Using the thermal gun on electronics is a super idea!

Victron used to sell a plastic box for mounting the shunt. I check mine from time to time and it is never hot enough to worry about hurting anything. Make sure you get a box large enough for all your cables to fit, first box I bought was to tight. Here is the one I used. Mine might run a little cooler since it is properly labeled

I have run 200 amps thru mine. I have mounted over 20 of these items, which I mount to the frame rail. It is within 6 inches of a frame ground stud. Nevered worry about it getting hot. Now I worry more about my customers that do not keep battery post and terminal clean, especially after I repair and or replace battery cables and terminals. Especially after I take care to install 1600 watt solar system with a Magnum MSH and PT system.
