Am I the only one that is a little offended when parking lot camping or over nighting is referred to as 'boondocking'? I like boondocking and got my RV so that I have more options to stay in remote places without sacrificing comfort for my wife or dogs (or soon-to-be child). I consider this kind of camping 'real' boondocking. Off the grid (generally), remote areas with no hookups. Staying in a Wal Mart parking lot just isn't the same thing.

Anybody else feel this way?

There are many Urban definitions for Boondocking, some include camping at WalMart, some are even sexual.

The root word BOONDOCKS means:
1: rough country filled with dense brush
2: a rural area : sticks

Being off the Grid has different definitions or meanings too. Living in the middle of the desert and using a cell or paid for wifi for many is not considered Off the Grid. Many consider it being invisible, untraceable, leaving no record of existence, making all purchases in - Cash Only.

The definition does not affect your lifestyle.

At any rallies I've been to where there are no hookups & we're placed in a parking lot, it's been referred to as "dry camping". That sounds like overnighting at a WM/CrackerBarrel since to me, boondocking means being in a rural area.. which neither WM or CB qualify.

I'm not offended by it - just a difference in definition interpretation.

It has different meanings to different folks; Waldocking to 150 km on Llama trails in the Andes in your 6 x 6 deuce and a half. We have met Overlanders who have boondocked from Holland to Vietnam and back. They went from Montreal to Chile and back and refused to use any campground in any country.

I'm a little offended when someone is in an RV and that call that camping. In a tent on the hard ground, that's camping. Bringing your own comfy bed, refrigerator, shower, etc just isn't the same thing.

Try not to get hung up when someone uses a word in a different way than you. Sounds like you're more into boondocking for the bragging rights than the experience.

Not me, I am not offended by the term one uses to describe how they park for the night.

We'll call what you do "boondocking"... and what I do... "Wallydocking"...

Is that better ?

I've often used the term "wallydocking" when I plan on spending the night in a Walmart parking lot.. people usually give me a sideways look.. I then explain the difference between the two.. they usually give me a laugh and a smile..

Same here. It reminds me of all of the other things which seem to offend some folks like the use of "resort" or "Class" A, or "entry level"... etc, etc.

They're just words.

No offense taken or meant....

...but using the wrong term leads to misunderstanding and misinterpretation that can better be avoided by using the right term.

In the West "real" boondocking" is more easily done than in the East. The West has more public land. And I see you're in AZ. AZ is comprised of 53.5% public land.
