We found ourselves in a snowstorm as we came north thru Indianapolis this past February. It went from a few flurries to full blown storm with all lanes completely snowcovered - no lane markers visible and falling fast enough that the road wasn't "two tracked". We spotted a sign for Cabela's off of I-69 just north of the I-465 bypass. We called and asked if they were "RV friendly' and allowed overnight parking. The answer we got was that as long as we were an RV and not a semi truck - we were welcome to stay.

We pulled in and parked - visited the service desk to "check in". Staff let us know that we were welcome, confirmed that we had parked in the appropriate spot - and invited us to grab some coffee and enjoy the fire. There was a large shopping center across the way with a nice Irish Pub ... we ate a good dinner and enjoyed a pleasant evening in Cabela's parking lot. I'll make a point of shopping with them in the future if/when the need arises.

We came across this a few years back. It's a nice basic campground with excellent WiFi. The attendants appeared to be store employees whose work assignments rotated to the campground. We asked if the campground would be duplicated at other Cabellas locations, but no one knew.

Sidney is the corporate headquarters for Cabellas, and there is a nice steakhouse a short walk from the campground.

I'm going to guess that the Cabela's stores that are located in malls are not a place anyone should assume they are welcome to stay without checking with store management first.

There are stored in Tualatin OR (just south of Portland) and Springfield OR (just east of Eugene) that I have been to and neither one would have been a place a would have looked at and assumed it was OK to overnight boondock in the mall parking lot.

That is the only one I've stayed at. It was more of a marked parking lot with hookups for a reasonable price. High winds that night kept everyone awake and dressed, just in case.

Just wondering ... Did you eventually stay at either? We're heading south in November , looking to plot some stops.

Neither one allows overnighting. For the area south of Portland, there is a Camping World in Wilsonville. For the Eugene area there is a Walmart in Springfield that appears to allow overnighting. I like to go to the casino at exit 99 too.

We stayed there last April. Nice park. Got it free when we signed up for their Visa card. Plus $20 gift card. There is also a truck/RV parking area at this store.

We stayed at a Cabelas in southern suburban Omaha a couple of days ago. They directed us to an area away from their delivery trucks. Dry camping, but quiet with occasional security patrols. Much nicer than a Walmart.

Hopefully the policies of Bass Pro will be similar to Cabelas. I haven't read much about Bass Pro but they just purchased Cabelas. I believe I read they'd remain separate operations but one never knows in something that costs $5.5 billion.

We have stayed at the Cabelas in Hamburg PA on our way down to FL from MA and also on our way back from FL to MA. We use the dump station on our way back for FL, a small fee but easy so we are empty before garaging. We always go in and ask for permission and grab a bite to eat and shop a little..

We always consult the "Manager On Duty" whenever we contemplate resting a few hours in a business parking area. This is usually only as a result of another CG reservation mishap or other unfortunate events. We don't plan travel around these gracious hosts.
The MOD or their proxy will instruct you as to the local etiquette.
We'll usually frequent their establishment and make purchases too.

ESCAPEES CODE OF PARKING ETIQUETTE
1. Obtain permission from a qualified individual.
2. Park out of the way.
3. No awnings, chairs, or barbecue grill.
4. Avoid using slide-outs if at all possible.
5. Do not use your leveling jacks on asphalt.
6. Limit your stay - one night maximum!
7. Purchase gas, food, or supplies as a form of thank -you
when feasible.
8. Always leave an area cleaner than you found it.
9. Practice safety precautions.

We are travelers, so "camping" as such is only for one night - typically. Cabela's are our favorite stop and we have probably ONPed at at least a dozen by now. (I could shake my logs and actually tell anybody that cared.) Our big disappointment is that Hammond IN no long wants us to spend our money there. Either at the Cabela's or the nearby Walmart. I am told the ONPs get chased off by the city LEOs.

OH, Well it was nice to know you Hammond. Too bad you don't like out money any more.
