Chicago boondocking locations

I'll be visiting my son in Chicago this summer and looking for a place to park over night, or a camp ground close to Chicago, anyone have suggestions?

Unfortunately, there are no campgrounds within about 30 moles of Chicago,

You might try https://www.fishlakebeach.com/, which is about 40 miles out. There is a Metra train station with free parking, about 4 or 5 miles from the campground, so you could take the train into the city.

It is also possible to park overnight at McCormick Place, just south of downtown, fo $36 per night.

I agree with Joel about McCormick Place.

What park of Chicago do you want a campground? North, South, West?? It's a big place.

Perhaps getting a campground and let your son visit you. That would be a lot more pleasant.

North Chicago

My son lives not far from Lincoln park/Wrigley Field, so we prefer the north side, but not finding anything within an hour or more any, thanks for the suggestions,!

This is one we'd like but unfortunately it's around Elgin (train into city a couple miles away) and also it doesn't accept reservations which is hard to do when visiting someone. It gets good reviews on CampgroundReviews.com

If you happen to be coming from the west of Chicago you could plan to arrive Tues or Wed. in hopes of getting a site and then have your son visit with you through the weekend. Perhaps he'd like to get out of the city!

If it would happen to be full that early in the week then keep driving into the city and McCormick Place would be an option.

Farther north at Waukegan would be Illinois Beach State Park & have him visit with you the weekend. Perhaps you could get reservations there. You could tour into Wisconsin.

Good Luck!

There is a campground on I-80 and about I-355. Thoar would be about a 40 mike drive to the north side of Chicago.
There is also a a campground in Winfield, ill straight out off of I-88. That one is a nice park. And that would be about 30 miles west of Chicago

There is camping in Cook County. The Forest Preserves of Cook County have multiple locations for RV camping. http://fpdcc.com/camping/

There's also Illinois Beach State Park but that's about 40 miles from the city. Train access (Metra) is very close though.

There's also the Paul Wolff Campground in Elgin. http://www.kaneforest.com/ForestPreserveView.aspx?ID=11
