El paso, tx and east

I am in El Paso right now and am heading East - slowly, very slowly.

I'd like to find a safe place to boondock for a week or so (by a Lake would be a bonus !!). Somewhere within a few hours drive of here.

Anybody know of such a place ? I don't mean an O/N at Walmart or a Truck Stop.

Try San Angelo - Twin Buttes Reservoir or Foster Park

Try Balmoeh (sp?) State Park. About three hours east of El Paso on I10. Small spring fed lake in the middle of the desert. Great cold swimming hole in the heat of summer.

Haven't stayed there, but I've chatted with the fella on various forums. Here's his website.

Its Balmorrhea State Park. Very cool, but not free. Texas state parks are getting on the pricey side if you don't have the annual pass.
