Extended Run - Champion

I've got a pair of Champion 3400's that I want to add an external tank to. I know they are gravity fed, so I'll mount the tank above. My question is on the fuel cap fitting - is there any reason I can't drill a hole in the current cap and plumb a fitting in? The caps I'm finding online are ridiculously expensive. Am I missing something about them that makes them special?

Other than the cap/fitting, it seems the rest is pretty easy to accomplish with a marine tank, lines, and fittings. If you've done one, I'd appreciate feedback.

If you modify your cap, make sure it no longer vents, and seals well, otherwise gas will pour out.

Then make sure you can use it without the extended run hose. It will need to vent.

What makes those caps special is they pad the pockets of the seller.

I didn't take the vent into consideration, thank you!

I paid the high price for the one for my Honda eu2000.

Modifying the old one has you drilling out the vent.

This is how is see it....

You are attempting to modify a fuel flow component, creating a very real potential for a fuel leak, near a real source of ignition, do you really want that responsibility/liability?.

I know I don't.

Best of luck, whatever you end up doing.

I've been able to manage power to get over 8 hours out of the two at night running the bedroom AC, so for now I've tabled the idea.
