I own 4 Garmin GPS's from a 760 in the motorhome to a Montana on my dirtbike and a couple in between. Basecamp is very powerful but not particularly intuitive. Once you get past the learning curve it's a great tool but the curve is steep and many give up. My advice - if you are somewhat computer savvy you will like Basecamp once you get up to speed with it. If you're not you'll probably not be happy with it.

We have three Garmin GPS units that include the RV760 we use in our truck when pulling the TT and a Zumo on my ST1300 sport touring motorcycle. I use Basecamp to set up our major travel routes for trips, then download them to the GPS. As said above, Basecamp is very powerful, but does have a learning curve. On any side trips we tend to use either Google Maps on our iPhones or iPad Air or we use the GPS built into our F150.

Garmin is the best gps I’ve found but only use basecamp for like a motorcycle trip when you want to take a special route or to stay off highways. Not sure why you would want to use it for a Rv.

It's taken me several tries over a few years to learn and grudgingly like BaseCamp. I've even begun to appreciate the oft-maligned Trip-Planner function. The biggest problem I have is that when you force BaseCamp to use specific waypoints you have to watch it like a hawk, because sometimes it will calculate a route that backtracks on itself to pick up the waypoint. That occurs when you think you select a waypoint on one side of a divided highway, but it's actually on the other side (in other words, operator = me error, not a bug).

I guess the Garmin folks have turned me into a trained seal. Keep throwing me a cold fish now and then and I'll keep using the software. ;-)

I create the route in Google maps and only use base camp to export it to the Garmin.

The gpx file imports to Base Camp as a track, you have to convert it to a route by right clicking the track file and select "Create route from selected track". He leaves that step out.

I use Tyre (available free from TomTom) and a Garmin. Tyre does everything I need to do. Maybe Basecamp will do something Tyre won't do, but if it does, I apparently don't need it.

Like Thor 37 GT, I usually only use it for my motorcycle trips where I want to force a route no sane person would normally take. But I have used it in the RV when we wanted to force it to take us around a metropolitan area with high traffic or take a detour through an area we thought would be particularly scenic.

I thought I was pretty savvy but I hate BaseCamp. Give me back my MapSource. So much simpler but won't run on Windows 10.

I wrote database apps for several years and worked my last few years in tech and software support supporting a couple of hundred users within a 100 mile radius of my home office.

I hate BaseCamp as well, though I admit I started watching a video on how to use it and quickly decided "This is nuts!"

I used Mapsource for many years and resisted switching to Basecamp but finally threw in the towel a few years ago. Now that I'm up to speed with Basecamp I wouldn't go back. Too many things that BC can do that Mapsource can't. That said I use BC to do a lot more than laying out RV routes. For many Mapsource will do everything they need.
