Generator - not the same old question.

I plan to boondock on property I own for a few weeks in July. I have a Yamaha 2400 IS. It is a pretty blue. How much do I need to keep it covered when not in use? Can it be uncovered out in the rain for example.

Should I use it, then let it cool, then cover it?

There fine out in the rain. I used my Yamaha 2400 on my boat, back in 2003, for 5 years, in salt water. It got some rust on the handles and corner of the gas tank but its still running.

My daughter ran it for 2 weeks straight during Super Storm Sandy. I assure you, she didn't cover it.

My Honda EU2000 has been out on deck for 8 years, uncovered. Some rust from the salt air and fading color.

Your pretty blue might fad a bit but outside is fine

I like to cover things if they are left unattended for a long time.
We get mud daubers plugging up ever nook and cranny of things around here outside if left too long so the cover would help close up any and all cracks etc that something might want to live in.

I plan to use it for about a month of boondocking in mid July to mid August. It usually rains a few times a week. From what you are saying is it ok to use it in the rain and really I do not need to baby it?

After I am done I will wipe it off, put the cover back on it and store it in the garage until next summer.

Thanks for the info.

Generators are not really cheap and some can be down right expensive. If you are using it for a month straight I would assume it will be out of sight or at least around the corner or away from the outdoor living areas to keep the noise down as much as possible. With this I would make a quick and easy "roof/cover" over the top of the generator. Doesn't have to be fancy but something like four cinder blocks with a 3'x3' piece of plywood over the top or the plywood with four 2x4 legs screwed to it. Why would you not want to cover it from the rain and direct sunlight?

My little Yamaha 1000 has been out in the weather more then it's been inside. Same thing with my Champion inverter gen. They aren't affected by the elements.
