Lake Tahoe Area Camping
We are probably going to start or trip home tomorrow after a few weeks on the northern CA coast. Planning to take the I-80 route and thinking of a first stop in the Lake Tahoe area. Anyone have any thoughts for a nice spot on the northern side of the lake that we can dry camp?

check the casinos.
in reno, the atlantis casino welcomes rvers.
there is always wally docking.
per allstays, it does not look there are any walmarts in the area that accept overnight rv parking. if you find a walmart, i have had good luck asking management or security for permission to park and where to park, even when they are not on allstays list.

Don't know of any boondocking sites on the north part of the lake. I'm sure you realize that Lake Tahoe is about 25 mi off I 80. The casinos are on the south part of the lake and that's a really long way from I 80 You might go on over to Reno, there's a Cabela's there. I've heard that there are signs that say no overnight parking but they allow it, call them to check. Also, check www.casinocampers.com for casinos in Reno or Sparks that allow overnight. I know John Ascuaga's Nugget does and Rail City but their lot may be small.

Missourijan,
Thanks for the tips. We stopped at Cabela's and asked. They said, no problem, disregard the signs and enjoy your evening, no one will bother you. They even have a dump station in the back of the parking lot for $5 for those that need it.
Cheers,
Glenn

I'm guessing since you guys stopped at Cabelas already you found you a spot for overnighting. I'm sure you'll like checking out the Cabelas and their incredible taxidermy style wildlife displays. If you're planning on staying a day or so the Reno Air Races are going on through Sunday. They're at the Stead Airport, about 10 miles north of Reno on 395. Pretty nice event. Kind of like Nascar in the air. Planes racing each other around a closed course wing tip to wing tip. If your still wanting a spot near Lake Tahoe, there are several campgrounds along 89 heading to the lake. They can all be found and reserved on the reserveamerica.com web site. They all nestle up next to the Truckee river and it's a short drive to the lake and some great places to eat and enjoy the sights.

Wolfpack Fan,
I took the DW to Cabela's for Friday date night and then over to Boomtown. Quality entertainment at a discount price .
We heard that the air races were going on but we have to be in Colorado Springs by Sunday evening so unfortunately we'll have to put that on the future to-do list. Thanks for the tips.

You're welcome! We used to live there and still have a son & family in Truckee, so we are pretty familiar with the area.
