I've been staying in rest areas overnight in cars and trucks since...well... forever, and never had anyone come to tell me to move. I frequently go through OK, and TX, NM and other states and always stay overnight at the rest areas. As long as you aren't putting slides out or making it look as if you are camping, you'll be fine. The reason that some states state a time limit is to keep someone from setting up their camp in a rest area to avoid campground fees. There is not enough money for the states to patrol rest areas and note the time each and every vehicle arrived then go back 24 hours (or whatever time limit they set) later to see if you have left.

We've stayed overnight at highway rest areas too. Yup, I agree - no slides or levelers. No lounge chairs and awnings stay in. I have been known to fire up the grill over by the picnic tables though.

I drop my jacks and open slides at rest areas. 7 years and no issues.
