Onan 4000 - Periodic run for an hour under load?

Hi Campers!

I've got an Onan 4000 generator in my toy hauler. Installed solar on the roof, so may not have to use the generator as much in the future.

Installed a gas cutoff switch near the carb and run the carb dry every time the camper is put away. Also keep some Star Tron fuel treatment in the toyhauler's internal gas tank. Always starts up and runs fine - no searching for the right RPM.

Question: People tell me that I should start the generator and work it under load for 30 minutes to an hour every month as preventative maintenance. If I've prevented the carb from getting gummed up with standing gas over time with the cutoff switch - why do I need to run the generator? Is there something else requiring periodic use of the generator?

I run the generator 10-20 minutes under load to heat up the generator windings and remove any humidity/condensation. Mandatory - no. Preventative - yes.

Thanks -

I'm still a little foggy on the danger from no periodic running on the generator windings. Are there other parts of the machine that need a similar workout?

Just trying to better understand the maintenance requirements.

It's been my understanding that moisture forms on the windings and eventually corrosion starts. By running it under load for the recommended time they heat up enough to dry them out. Every generator I've had including diesels have recommended this. Oman says 2 hrs per month. I do about 1.5 every six weeks and call it good. YMMV

Every 3 months for 20 to 30 minutes. Worked for me for 3 motorhomes since 1985. I have never replaced a single carburator.

I'm still testing the " Run it out of gas and leave it for 6 months plan "

Two weeks and I'll know if it works the 16th time.

If it works in a marine environment it would probably work where I go.
