I use the AllStays app which shows you all your overnight options and indicates which Walmart do NOT allow overnight parking.
With houses in NJ and FL, sons in CA and WY, I'm driving long distance pretty much every other month. My choices for quick, free overnights are in order of preference:
1. Cracker Barrel - designated RV spots and chance for a good meal if open, usually quiet
2. Walmart - check that overnight parking is allowed on the app, sometimes noisy, sometimes dangerous (I have pulled into and pulled out of Walmarts when I don't get a good feel - homeless encampment, groups of locals hanging out by their cars, etc.)
3. Rest Areas - if late and you see the trucks parked on the ramp, go over the the car side. You should be able to park across a few spots to get some sleep.
4. FJ or other truck stop - noisy, nefarious activity especially on truck side. I park by the pumps, along the curb in a well lit spot
