Has anyone ever parked overnight at the rest area on I-40 near Williams, AZ?
We are looking for a good spot to spend the night on our way to Las Vegas and this looked like a good waypoint for us.
Anyone have any info or other suggestions?

Hi. Kinda piqued my interest, so I looked it up. It is called the "Parks Rest Area", is east of Williams and accessible only when west-bound.

Arizona calls it a "turnout".

Question: What is a turnout?

Answer: A turnout is similar to a rest area but has few, if any, amenities. Turnouts may offer a scenic view of the surrounding landscape.

That's what I found, anyway. Looks to be a great place for some people, kinda grim for others.

The plan will be Ruidoso Downs Wal Mart Friday night, Williams AZ rest stop Saturday and Las Vegas Sunday! Looks like we have a trip!!

There's a huge open area off Exit 151 between Williams and Ash Fork, Welch Road. It's on national forest land and it's off the freeway and a great place to stop for the night. 100 rv's could park there, no facilities, just big open meadow, all flat. At the exit turn right and go straight, there were 5 other rv's there last week when we stayed there.

Well, technically there is boondocking and there is dry camping. You are dry camping. Boondocking implies a certain secretiveness, a more solitary affair closer to nature. And for someone new it's a bit difficult to tell apart, a bit because the line is blurry.

I think its more important to welcome the newcomer and help him or her along. It's exactly like visiting a foreign country, yer not going to get the language exactly right. So what??!! Everyone was new at one time, and everyone should remember that.

We ended up staying here last night, very nice, large, flat area, just a hundred yards or so from the access road. Had the place all to ourselves and spent an awesome quiet night there.

Hopefully I have redeemed myself in the eyes of the forum purists!

We recently spent 2 nights (not by choice) in the Meteor Crater RA about 40 miles east of Flagstaff. This is the first time we have done this. The rest area was large and plenty of truck parking. Other than big trucks coming in and out at night, we had no problems there.
