16 Years Ago Today, Where Were You

I can never forget Sept. 11, 2001 and only hope we never forget. I was working for the Dept. of the Navy and when I got up to go to work that morning the Attacks were well underway, I live on west coast. I was totally dumbfounded and could not believe what I was seeing on TV. Security was so tight on the military base I worked at that I could not get on the base because of the long lines of cars waiting to get on the base. Did not get to work till 1130 am should have been there by 700 am. The one thing that still sticks in my mind is how great the people of New York City handled it all. It completely changed my feelings toward New Yorkers.

We were at Mesa Verde National Park just breaking camp to depart for Salt Lake City. Got the initial news on AM radio but it was sketchy at best. Very poor radio reception all the way north. Did not get comprehensive information until we got to SLC. Had a cell call from our son from the UK while enroute. He gave us the best info available at the time. He was watching in on the British Telly. That cemented our decision to get XM radio. No more days like that for us.

Stuck in SoCal on a job. Luckily had a rental car so simply drove home three days later.

My youngest son called and woke us up to let us know what was going on. Ironically I had worked on the plan of how the FAA would clear the national airspace if something like this happened prior to my retirement. We all worried that our plan might not work. It sure as hell did!

Each Air Traffic Control position had a black binder with complete instructions including the precise phraseology to use. We made them review it on a regular basis. It even spelled out which airport each type Aircraft would go to.

The next thing I heard were F16s over my house that same morning.

I was LEO testifying in court when someone interrupted the proceedings to advise everyone. The USA changed that day, and we are still at WAR with Islam.

I was at my new assignment at HQMC at the Navy Annex, just up the hill from the Pentagon. Welcome to DC!

I was supposed to be at a business conference in Palm Springs Ca., but thankfully the trip was cancelled at the last minute due to being short handed at work, also the other guy that was scheduled to go with me came down with a cold. So I was at home that morning, getting ready to go into work to cover a shift on a job I didn't normally do. So we spent the afternoon at work huddled around an old beat up portable radio with a coat hanger for an antenna to get news.

I was at the home office of State Farm Insurance getting instruction for a new position I'd recently started. Being a typical week there were people there from all over the country. Now, how to get them all home. They did, with a combination of rental cars, chartered busses and a few hanging around until airline flights resumed. I was one of the few that lived close enough I'd been able to drive down in my own car.

I was in an office building just up the hill from the Pentagon. I had retired from the Army and a position in the Pentagon at the end of May. My wife was still working in the Pentagon as an Air Force civilian. She called me after the twin towers attack to ask if I had heard the news. A short time later I heard the sirens responding to the Pentagon. I couldn't get her back on the phone. From the news coverage I could tell her office was close to the point of impact. It was a long 2 hours before she was able to reach me to let me know she was ok. Then came the challenge of getting to her and getting home. I knew 12 of the people who died that day. Needless to say this is a somber day for us.

Owned a travel agency at the time, we were leaving that night to attend our national meeting in Atlanta. I was chairman of our local Red Cross and got a phone call telling me that a plane was being tracked over Cambria County and our air disaster team was on alert. Long story short......I spent the next 4 weeks in Shanksville, PA, while my business was nearly destroyed.

Just got up when my Dau. called and said turn on the TV. What a shock. The DW and I had just retired 1 Sept , still setting up a house we had just built. Three sons in the Army. Four tours over there for them, all safe. A very sad day for the World.
