The Air Force will discontinue the use of vehicl decals on 15 Mar 2007. Information was published in the Maxwell/Gunter Paper

Partial quote from the cited source:

"...while the decals will not be needed at Maxwell-Gunter, people may want to leave them on their windshields if they require entry to other military installations.
He said most Air Force bases will not longer require decals by March 15, but Army, Navy and Marine Corps bases may still want the stickers on the vehicle."

That's strange. I live at Ft. Bragg which connects with Pope AFB. We bought a new van in Dec and procrastinated getting a decal. We have been driving on and off Ft. Polk w/o any prob, just have to show ID. (You have to show ID even with a decal btw.) I went to take the kids to the AFB playground Tuesday, which is closer to my house than the one on Bragg. I was not allowed to enter the AFB. I stopped and showed my ID, but the MP told me that I could not enter unless I went to the main AFB gate and got a temporary pass for my POV. I was shocked. Anyway, I called dh and he came home and got a decal for my van.

As for the difference in security between the 2 bases. The gates at Bragg are guarded by contractor guards (a private security company). The AFB gates (even the ones joining Bragg) are guarded by MPs. At Bragg, anyone can get on. If you don't have military ID, you simply go through a lane where they make you open up all your doors, hood, and trunk, get out of your vehicle, show license and registration, and you can enter. They don't keep track of who is entering.

Every other army base I have been on, you must have a military ID and decal, or you have to pull over and apply for a temp pass. If you can't prove business on base, you can't get on.

Anyway, I am rambling now, just found it odd that the AFB was stopping decals. You have to show ID anyway, even with the decal.
