Hello,
I’m the wife of a veteran and exercise my CHAMPVA benefits as a secondary to my primary. I locate doctors through landline to confirm their acceptance of CHAMVA . This way, I don’t experience any issues with the bills being paid. No out of pocket expenses; no even co-payment. I haven’t experienced but a time or two were a doctor didn’t accept CHAMPA and I was required to pay my co-payment. In this scenario ,request a completed super bill for doctor office and be sure all information required by the VA such as;diagnostic codes , your personal information , the doctors information , to name a few is completed on the required form. Be sure to read the book throughly that the VA sends you on your benefits ; follow repayment procedures to the exact or your request for payment will be kicked back after weeks of awaiting payment.
Prescription are a bit easier. I pay at the counter, since I use it as a secondary insurer. I then complete a form and include my pharmacy receipt then mail documents. Weeks later a check is cut covering prescription cost. A little paperwork involved, but it’s worth saving on the cost of prescriptions.
I believe procedures are slightly different when using it as a primary.
