D Day, 6th of June 1944

Thus started the end of the Axis.

Movies such as "Saving Private Ryan" dared to show the slaughter of US troops on Omaha Beach.

Others like "The longest day" took liberties (to please the public) but did have many kernels of truth. To me, my opinon only, while under murderous fire a company of Army Rangers and combat engineers from the 299th Engineer Battalion broke through the defensive barriers, scaled the cliffs and took out the German emplacements. That was how it really happened.

Another truthful movie was "A bridge too far". In a grab for glory too many Allied lives were lost.

However, this is a salute to the courage of the men who swallowed hard and charged the beaches. And to General Eisenhower, who's wisdom took writers many decades to uncover.

God bless them all.....D DAY, 6th of June 1944. (Official surrender date of the Axis: 8 May 1945)

God Bless them all is right. I highly recommend the series Band of Brothers. When that came out on DVD, we watched an episode a night with our teenaged sons, who are military history fans. I think another more realisitic attempt at depicting that place in time.

Thank you to all who serve.
