subj/united states marine corps birthday 2009// gentext/remarks/1. On behalf
of the men and women of the united states navy, congratulations on 234 years
of distinguished service to our great nation. We are honored to have served
alongside you throughout our proud history and we look forward to our
promising future with you, as the sea services of our nation.

2. As you celebrate another birthday, you can be rightly proud of your
accomplishments this year. You are known around the world for your
seriousness of purpose, professionalism, and dedication because of your
actions in iraq, afghanistan, and beyond. Generations of marines who will
follow you will forever note your tenacity and competence in today's conflicts
and reflect with pride on the standards you have upheld in both peace and war.

3. Today we remember our marine shipmates who, because they have made the
ultimate sacrifice, can not share in this birthday celebration. While they
are not here to celebrate with us, we celebrate them and the history they have
written with their lives.
We also thank and honor marine families whose support is vital to any mission.

4. Congratulations on 234 continuous years of dedicated service to our
nation. Together, with you, we are proud to be the world's foremost
expeditionary team. Happy birthday.

5. Released by admiral g. Roughead, chief of naval operations.//
