Cutting pay and benefits is not the same as too many troops or too many wars. Write your congressman/president about the latter, but support the troops we have and ensure they have a just wages and benefits.
Better idea, lets cut the number, pay and benefits of our congressmen and president!

Yes, that would be a good start!

Two separate issues here. Pay and benefits affect the country's ability to attract and retain quality people to perform a potentially deadly job.
The number of military members and where they are stationed is a subject of great debate. Why do we have military units in Africa or a dozen other countries as you mentioned? IMO the reason is to keep aggressive countries off-shore, and meet them with an immediate response if/when required. (a lesson the WW's taught America)

[ Moderator Edit ] I am retired military, 22 years. What screwed things up was the long war in Iraq. Totally uncalled for, not paid for, did more damage than good in the long run. Like the poster asked though, why all those troops in those places? Let those counties pay for it. Our citizens are having to pay too much money for policing problems around the world. On that note, I'm off to try and help yet another unfortunate AMERICAN family who has too little this holiday season.

Less troops would mean less equipment, less payroll, etc. But US capability to engage in multiple conflicts melts away, as does the US stature of being formidable to the foe.
A quandry for sure.
