USS Midway (CVA-41)

Here’s a Navy F4 Phantom II picture.

From 1970 – 1973 we made two long combat cruises aboard the Midway. I was a member of this squadron; VF-151. During that time the Midway was home pored at NS Alameda, CA. Late in 1973 it was forward deployed to Japan and ported at USNB Yokosuka, Japan. The air wing including, VF-151, went to Japan with the Midway. I went to shore duty with VA-125 at Naval Air Station, Lemoore, CA.

That's probably because the Tuskegee Airmen flew U.S. Army Air Force aircraft. The U.S. Air Force was established in 1947.

Looks like it has Air Force paint job which would make it an A7-D.

Not all F-4s had a happy ending like being mounted on a pedestal as a monument. My USMC squadron lost several during Tet in 1968.

This pic kinda threw me for a loop at first because of the absence of "chin whiskers." The squadron had F-4Bs which had a distinctive housing under the radome for an infrared seeker when I was a member. VF-151 was my first of four fighter squadrons and I was on that 1970 Midway cruise(Hi, squadron mate.) Later they transitioned to the F-4N which was an updated and reworked F-4B retaining the F-4B radome with the IR housing even though the system had been removed years before. The AF F-4Cs had the same radome.
The squadron later flew the F-4J for a few years and ended up their affair with the Phantom flying the F-4S, a much updated and improved F-4J keeping the F-4J radome sans IR housing. The AF F-4Ds had the same radome.
It may have been the only Navy squadron to fly all four Navy models of the F-4. They traded in the Phantoms for F/A-18 Hornets and were redesignated VFA-151 based at NAS Lemoore, CA.

USS Midway (CVA-41)

I took this picture from “Vultures Row” on the Midway, 1971. I was with VF-151 from 1970 to 1973.
