I recognized that C123 as being in Atwater right away. One of the first aviation museums i ever went to as a kid. As an adult, I flew my first overnight trip, (RON) as pilot in command into Atwater in a tail number that recently crashed. Luckily everyone survived.

Heritage Flight Training Course

Each year, in early March, Davis-Monthan AFB hosts the Air Combat Commandís Heritage Flight Training Course in Tucson, Arizona. The course typically runs Wednesday thru Sunday and consists of daily briefings and training flights of combined current and vintage aircraft, culminating in a graduation airshow on Sunday. This year's course ran March 3 - 7. Although the base isn't open to the public for the airshow, if you have on base privileges, you'll have a great view of the action from any of the flight line parking lots.

Here are a couple of articles describing the event: https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zon...-mind-boggling and https://www.dm.af.mil/Media/Article-...g-course-2021/

If you're in the Tucson area in early March, it's well worth arranging your schedule to watch the show.

Take care,
Stu

That pic is either Photoshopped or one helluva overshoot. No shooter wants to become the shootee.
I wasn't sure what I was looking at at first.

According to the article from which the photo comes: "Pro aviation photographer Larry Grace was there to catch an incredibly unique moment in which both specially painted A-10s performed the "Heritage Break," a stunning crossing maneuver that serves as the apex of the Heritage Flight program."

You can see more of Larry Grace's aviation related photo's here: Aviation

Take care,

That must be a senior officer on the cat. It looks like a "Commander's Moon" type of night to me.

Here's a short YT video about Jack Ensch, a RIO in VF-161 which was the sister squadron to my squadron, VF-151. He mentions being in Mugs McKewon's back seat on a flight where they shot down 2 MiG-17s. That's quite a story in itself.
Mugs was a helluva mouth and he proved he was a helluva pilot when he got his MiGs. I'm told he calmed down and was a lot easier to be around after he got the MiGs.
Jack describes being shot down and captured on a later flight with a different pilot. I had left VF-151 and the Midway for shore duty with VF-121 at Miramar when this happened.

I was thinking about you when I posted.
After two combat cruises of doing little more exciting than air-to-mud missions digging round swimming holes and turning trees into toothpicks I was really feeling a little envious of the guys having a chance at MiGs. The best I could hope for was one of my friends or one of the guys I trained would get one. My former roommate, best friend and best man did get a MiG-17.
You guys working your butts off day after day to keep them in the air deserve a helluva lot of the credit.
That's a really nice pic of a Brand X "Rockriver."

Winnah, winnah...... chicken dinner! Of course ya' gotta suspect a ringer in this case.
Follow up question: Each squadron usually has a "double nuts." It usually has a slightly different and possibly more colorful paint job especially on the tail. Whose bird is it?
BTW, this may not be current practice with the dull grey paint jobs these days.
