One time while driving around on the Davis Monthan AFB taking pictures of display aircraft scattered around base, I got this one of this F4 with the famous COL Olds painted on it. I don’t know if that’s an actual aircraft he actually flew during his illustrious career.

The VA told me in 2014 that being on the flight line for close to 5 years out of my 7 1/2 years had no bearing on my hearing loss and denied my request for hearing aids, of course that was in the Obama years. My dad got hearing aids through them for WW II and that was in the Bush 2 years. Go figure!

He may have flown that tail number, but the F-4C that he got his 2 kills in is tail number 829 and it is in the Air Force museum.
Cool pic, thanks.

They gave me a disability four or five years ago for my aircrew time in C-130's. They have eased up on disability for this so go try again!

A3 Skywarrior (Whale) was longer, wider and taller but was only carrier based for a few years. Viggie replaced it as carrier based nuclear strategic bomber. The Ra5c Vigilante later was converted for reconnaissance. It was used during the Cuban Missile Crisis as well as other missions similar to the U2 and SR71. It was decommissioned in 1979.

The "Viggie" had the same J-79-GE-8 engines as our F-4Bs but they could easily outrun us and run us out of gas. They were so clean they had very little parasitic drag compared to us with our weapons pylons, bomb racks, missile launching rails, missiles and a centerline fuel or two wing mounted fuel tanks.
When flying a photo escort mission on a Viggie or even on a RF-8A Photo Crusader we had to memorize the route to know or anticipate when and in what direction he was going to turn on his photo run. The second he started his turn away from us we would immediately dive across his tail to get on the inside of his turn. That was the only way we could save wasting fuel by using the geometry of the turn instead of adding power to keep our speed up and be in position when he rolled out of his turn.
Ahh....the good old days.

Here's a link to a podcast featuring an interview with former Vigilante pilot Bob Jellison, retired U.S. Navy Captain, who describes the A-5 and his 100+ missions in it over North Vietnam.
Take care,
Stu

When I was onboard Oriskany 71-74 we had both A5's and A3's and the O boat being an older carrier those things took up a lot of flight deck space.
I love the A5 it's the only aircraft I ever saw that looks like it's going 500 knots just setting there. The Whale not so much.

Later years both Phantoms and Viggie's had J79-10. Also, at one point in the early/mid 60's a J79 from an F104 powered the Green Monster to the Land Speed Record
