It's been close to 50 years since I strapped on a T-28 so I may be wrong about this but IIRC the one or two T-28C's assigned as station aircraft to NAS Miramar had 4 blade props for better deck clearance during carrier ops. Try as I might I can't find any information or photos to verify that.
Can anyone confirm or disprove my recollection? On any given day I could be hopping out of an F-4B or J into a TA-4F or J, an A-4E or a T-28B or C. Each model had its own set of engine and airframe normal and emergency procedures and limitations which had to be committed to memory.
We were working 60+ hours a week cranking out trained fighter pilots for the fleet. I was flying at least two and sometimes three hops a day for several years. It got to the point where I was rushing around to and from aircraft on 4 different flight lines on any given day. We used F-4s from VF-121, A-4Es from Navy Fighter Weapons School(Topgun,) TA-4s from VF-126 and T-28s from NAS Miramar.
It was the greatest job a young guy could have but I eventually about wore myself out. It got to the point where I had to stop and ask myself which aircraft I had just strapped on and how to start it without burning it up. Once I got it started it all seemed to come back. I did try to make sure I had the NATOPs Emergency Pocket Checklist for the aircraft I was flying in my G suit pocket or helmet bag.
The pace never let up until I went back to the fleet to VF-92 as the war was winding down. I lost a lot of leave I wasn't able to use while in VF-121.

Here's one for you FastEagle. I was in VA-86 during that time frame and took this pic in the Med off the coast of Spain. You probably shook your fist at me a few times on the flight deck while I was trying to learn the ropes of shipboard ops, as I was a lowly Ensign when I joined the "Winders" in March of '78 in the Med while they were already on cruise.

This was taken RTB to Miramar after a mission while going through the TOPGUN Adversary Course.

Here's a link to a photo of the Temco T-35 "Buckaroo" which competed with the Fairchild T-31 and the Beechcraft T-34 "Mentor" to be the next primary trainer for the USAF and the USN. Both the T-31 and the T-34 had more horsepower than the T-35. The T-34 was the only one of the three that had a nosewheel and that was the direction both services were going for future tactical aircraft and trainers.
I have flown the T-34B but only got to sit in the T-35 and have never seen a T-31. My 1946 Globe Swift is on the wing of the T-35 in the cover photo taken over La Jolla cove. Chuck Lisher who later founded the SF-260 "Team America" flight demonstration team is flying the T-35. He was later killed in a Bede BD-5J jet flying on a government contract.

One of the last aircraft on display at NAS Cecil Field, FL before BRAC closure.
Congratulations, it was my experience that most pilots, after 1975 didn't make it to an operational squadron as an ENS. Only the "SH" ---LOL!

Thanks for the compliment, but I think it was more a matter of timing and good luck. I just happened to hit everything at the right time and was blessed that flying always seemed to come easily.

Fast Eagle
I did two tours of sea duty with Navy Fighter Squadron 41. The first was with the F4 Phantom II including a trip the South China Sea.
The second time I made two Mediterranean Sea/Indian Ocean cruses with the F14 Tomcat.
Fast Eagle was the squadron call sign.

Douglas F4D Skyray
This is a file photo of an F4D aircraft. In 1962 it was redesignated as an F-6 Skyray.
It was the first carrier based jet fighter for the USN/USMC that could exceed Mach 1 in level flight. At one time it held the world speed record at just a little over 750 MPH.

I thought it was a nice-looking machine except for the fact from the cockpit forward it looked like the EF-10B "Drut" which just about everybody agreed was "fugly."
