Retiree medical in west Phoenix valley
I've been retired in northern Virginia for 18 years and have been spoiled by the easy access to routine and specialty care at Walter Reed and Ft. Belvoir hospitals as well as a local Tricare clinic. I'm planning to move to the west Phoenix valley area in the next year and am wondering about the care options there. Does the Luke clinic see retirees? What do you do for specialty care if Luke doesn't have that specialty (i.e., opthomology clinic for glaucoma treatment). I'm on Tricare Prime now. Is that the best choice for Phoenix?

Phoenix has had one of the worst VA records going. I'd do a lot of checking before moving there.

I don't use VA. I'm asking about care using Tricare.

Yea, that's not Tricare.
VA is a totally different animal.

Use Medicare and tri-care as you’re back up. I’m sure there is a lot of specialty care positions in that huge city

I have a few years to go before I'm eligible for Medicare.
I guess I"ll try contacting the Luke clinic to ask about retiree care. I thought someone here would know the answer.

Good luck with that. Luke is not that big, has lots of officer trainees and PHX has lots of retirees.

being in the far west valley buckeye az i will say carl haydn va in phx is much better then castle point va in ny. there is care in avondale so you do not need to go to phx. not at luke it is off thmas rd and the 101 you will be better off going to the va. just my opinion i have had better luck

If you are 65, it's much easier to use Medicare.

I used VA care solely in Phoenix starting in 2011 and ending in 2016. I keep it active for my eyeglasses and hearing aids. I was lucky to "survive" the care given to me in the VA hospital.
The VA has improved and has opened more clinics in different areas of the metro area but still has a long way to go. Seeing an outside specialist is possible but sometimes can take some time to get scheduled.
Thankfully I am on Medicare now.
