RIP General Schwarzkopf

Sad day. General Schwarzkopf was a Soldier's Soldier. He was my boss, and friend. I worked for the General while he was the Commander of the 172d Inf Bde, AK. It was really a good time and I was honored to be with him when he was promoted to Colonel. I salute you for your Service to this great Country

One of the memorable no nonsense generals who led by example. I remember watching him during desert storm and how direct he was with the media. He sure said it the way it was.

Our nation lost a great soldier and leader. I compared his manner and leadership to General McArthur's. Of course CSM Kirtland knows better than I can only imagine.

Little known facts about the First Gulf War.

Schwarzkopf drew up the first attack plans and submitted them to Bush I, et al. Bush and Powell noted that the plan called for a straight-on attack right into the heart of the Republican Guard. They asked Schwartzkopf if there was anything else he wanted. "Two more divisions."

Powell and the Joint Chiefs drew up the "end run" plan, Bush doubled the military force, and Schwarzkopf got the credit. Also, those smart bombs he was shown on TV every night guiding into buildings and onto bridges were shown after the war to have been no more effective than "dumb" bombs.

As with MacArthur, who was a great general, PR played a large part in his reputation.

Bowser, I'm not understanding your comment on smart vs dumb bombs. How can a smart bomb not be more effective?

But on topic, it's hard for me to comprehend that he was 78 yr old. The first Gulf war was a career ago...that's also hard to swallow.

I too had the honor to know and serve under the general. After leaving the Ranger battalion in 1983, I was assigned to drive for the Command Sargent Major of the 24th ID, General Schwarzkopf was the Division's commanding officer at that time. He was a large presence in the building!

I will miss him too. I had the privledge of working for him. Outstanding leader.

I like when he said "It's God that can forgive the bad guys, but it's our job to arrange the meeting"

I worked for him twice and greatly respect his leadership. He was one tough guy and was uniquely suited for the job as CENTOM commander. While an earlier post credited someone else for the "hail Mary" tactics, I know the source and circumstances surrounding it and it was not the President and Chairman or their staffs. The statement that the press made him is partly true. He knew how to use the press to his advantage and did that very well. General, we will meet you on the high ground.
