United States Coast Guard

As the "small" guy on the block, many things go unrecognized regarding our United States Coast Guard.

To you who brave the seas in adverse conditions to save lives, I say, "Thank you."

Coast guard

I add my thanks to Wayne's comments. Our Coast Guard station here routinely performs numerous very risky rescues that seem to go unnoticed. I have great respect and admiration for those men and women.

In hind-sight (which is always 20/20), I often wish I had gone CG rather than AF.

X2. My Dad was Coast Guard, although he wasn't braving the seas, he was braving Lake Michigan rescuing and saving lives

This retired Coastie (30 years) appreciates the kind words.

Now my son is carrying on the family Coast Guard tradition. He is the seventh Coastie, continuing the line going back to the early 1900s.

Best Regards!

Thanks to all for the kind words.

SAR (Search And Rescue) is always the celebrity Coast Guard mission...but for 24 years, I did Maritime Law Enforcement, Fisheries, and Maritime Security (they call it Homeland Security now).

Whatever the "Coastie" is told to do, he or she will be there protecting Americans when they need it most.

Fair winds and following seas to all.

I served in the Coast Guard from 1971 to 1978. Back then we did weather patrols in the North Atlantic, then we enforced the 200 mile fishing limit, then we patrolled southern waters to intercept drug smugglers all the while performing SAR missions and hound dogging Russian Submarines. I just toured the Eagle when it was at Constitution Pier in Boston and talked with many cadets. All I can say is the Guards future is in good hands whatever their mission. Semper Paratus!

I spent 3 years in the US Army, then 20 in the USCG. I really enjoyed my hitch in the USA, but was glad to go Coast Guard. Now, my wife and I are the proud mother-in-law and father-in-law of a LCDR in the Coast Guard. He just finished a two year tour as the CO of a USCG Cutter in the 7th District. Our daughter is real happy that he has a shore billet for the next few years.

Semper Paratus!

I served from 1980 to 1997 then was medically retired from a heart attack while assigned to USCGHQ. It was a great ride while it lasted. Highly recommend it. I to thank all of you for the kind words. The actor Kevin Costner said during the movie The Guardian, " Nobody appreciates the Coast Guard until they need them"
