Using VA card?

I'm traveling in Upper state New York, and came down with a very bad flu. Can I just use my VA card to go to any nearby VA Clinic? I'm near Batavia New York and I hear they have a clinic nearby.

When I traveled I had to go to the regional VA Med Center and get registered into their system and then use the hospital for care (either Out Patient Clinic or ER)
The computer system wasn't linked

Now I understand they can 'talk' with each other and have access to records.

Still not sure IF one can just pop into a clinic for care..but can go to VA Hospital ER

Yes any VA clinic/center will treat you if you are in the system. As posted here previously, VA has gone to computerized medical records. Word to the wise, they may transfer you to their location in the system. Did me.

Yes they are all linked now. I live/registered in Central Ohio. I got the "New" ID card while at the Raleigh/Durham, NC VA hospital visiting our daughter. Thank goodness they didn't change my location

I got my new I.D. Card while DW was taking Chemo in a nearby Hosp.
They took my photo, and it didn't take. It took 7 visits to get the photo. They would snap it, and it wouldn't send, and I suppose they had no way to save it. After 7 tries it finally went through. The computers they have in OKC. are older than my pc.
They have to ship photo to Tulsa, and they now send them back to you.
The old way worked well, just give the old purple card, and they would make a copy. Now they no longer have a purple card.

Just to close this one out. Seems the VA Clinic that I went to would not serve me. I would have to be in their system specifically. They told me I had to go to their main VA hospital in Rochester. But something I didn't know was my ID card number is also my Tricare number. So all I had to do was go to any local facility such as kstat or five star Urgent Care places that are usually in strip malls. They took my Tricare charged me $25 and prescribed a bunch of antibiotics. Then Walgreens accepted my Tricare as well. That's the route I'll take if anything happens again.

Hopefully I'm healthy now. Knock on wood.

If you are on Medicare, I would use it...no hassle, no bills, no paper work.

The answer is NO. You must still register at any clinic you use and wait to be assigned a doctor and get the first appointment. You can go to any VA Hospital for service and treatment but be prepared to wait for a very long time in the waiting room in many hospitals. I use my Medicare now almost exclusively since the VA system and quality of care of declined considerably. I now use them to only get my medications. Chuck

Depends on your state income cut offs.
And those with specific disabilities who are under the age of 65.
In states that expanded Medicaid, you may qualify for Medicaid if you earn $16,643 a year as a single individual or $28,180 for a family of three, while other family sizes can qualify at higher incomes. So probably not.
But the poster meant Medicare, which ..NO you don't qualify for.

Tricare was actually pretty easy. Almost every urgent care facility takes it now. And it was only 30 bucks. I also have the VA Choice Card, I wonder if that will work anywhere as well?

VA CHOICE........
MUST be referred and then APPROVED for specific procedure, specific Doctor within a specific time period
VA Primary Care Doctor MUST request it, TRI-WEST CHOICE must then approve it and THEY will schedule First doctor appointment

So NO you can NOT just 'use it'.
Great program when you can get it authorized. But that requires ALL the proper steps be taken FIRST.

Retired Veteran and your age....TriCare would be better option

I have used the VA Choice Card several times for a chiropractor. Never spoke to my regular doctor I just called the number and told him I wanted to see a chiropractor and they gave me an appointment with a doctor that I chose when I get back I'm going to go to acupuncture.
