Veterans Choice Card

Has anyone gotten the Veterans Choice Card?
I just received a Veterans Choice Card Temporary Program......it provides medical care outside the VA provided you get authorization for treatment by calling a 1-800 number

I have one. I live about 30 miles from the VA hospital, so I don't ever expect to be authorized to go outside the system unless they can't fit me in.

Is this Veterans Choice Card for all retired veterans, or maybe just disabled veterans, because I haven't heard about it till just now, and yes I'm in the VA system as I use the local VA clinic.

It is suppose to be automatic for all service veterans. They are still mailing them out.

It gives you the choice to go off net, if your going to have to wait longer than 30 days for an appointment with a doctor. Or you live 30 miles or so away from a authorized VA care facility. I think it's mainly if you use the VA.

Visit the VA website and read closely: http://www.va.gov/opa/choiceact/fact...nd_details.asp
Do not assume you can automatically go to any doctor without prior authorization.

I received my card and information on Thursday, however, looking at the guidelines, I don't think I would meet the criteria to be seen from an "out of VA Medical facility" provider.

I am curious though if it qualifies while traveing and not being able to go to your VA Medical Center or if one is not readily available. May have to call and ask those questions.

It is a temporary program, and the information didn't say what the termination date was for the program, that I saw any way....

One word of warning. The instructions say to show the card to RX for whatever discounts are available to vets.

I gave the card to the Pharmacist and she entered it as my Health Care Insurer, which then made my prescriptions full price. She clearly didn't understand. I had to get someone else to straighten it our.

As it turned out there were no discounts to be had.

According to the website, this program lasts for 3 years or until the funding expires. It was instituted by a directive from the White House to reduce the massive VA backlog.
