Camp Eagle
50 years ago today

I'm in a commo bunker about 50 meters inside the wire. Except for the infantry on the perimeter, Camp Eagle has been abandoned while we wait for the ARVN'S to take over. A bit before dusk a call comes in from a patrol about 4 or 5 klicks outside the wire, first reports are 2 wounded and 2 missing and they're looking for chopper support. A call goes down to Phu Bai and they come back and say Cobras will be on the way ASAP. Then we learn that choppers can only be released from Phu Bai with col. So&so's explicit permission. Unfortunately no-one knows where col. So&So is. For the next 1/2 hour communications go back & forth while they search one officers club after another and other locations searching for col. So&So. Eventually the radio goes silent and whether col. So&So is ever located remains unknown on our end.

About an hour later the infantry guys open up about 300-400 meters north along the perimeter. We're assuming they're bringing the patrol in through the wire and shortly thereafter the report comes in that the patrol is in and everyone is accounted for.
Two hours later we hear the chopper blades and we go outside the bunker and watch as two Cobras pound a presumably now empty jungle off in the distance.
Now I may not be the brightest bulb in the room, but one thing I do know is This Ain't How You Win a War.

Three weeks later, it's 6:00 AM and I'm picking up cigarette butts on the parade field at Ft Lewis, Washington. I'm OK with that. I'm not looking for a parade and I'm following the same footsteps of thousands of guys before me. Besides, tomorrow, with papers in my hand, I'll be hopping a plane and headed home.

Just married and recently out of the AF after 4 years, primarily on a missile crew in SD, returning to college before starting a career in small-town newspaper journalism.

Been back in the US four months after my second VN tour flying a Chinook for a year. New duty station is Fort Sill, OK, the artillery center...lots of familiar sounds!
