Three years civil service Naval Regional Medical Center, Camp Lejeune. When they created the commission, selection committee calling me from Bethesda "where is your application?"

Jumped ship and went active duty Air Force. 8ys, 9mo, 22 days. Maxwell AFB, RAF Lakenheath, and Luke AFB. Enjoyed every bit of it, both civilian and active duty. Planned to stay 20+ but the personnel management system overrode as the Major Board met with reduction in force in place resulting in non-select involuntary discharge. Wouldn't have fared any better in the Navy as the created positions were not new additions but "out of hide" within the medical corp, creating friction from the losing medical specialties, and the only ones augmented to Regular Navy at year 3 were those with prior enlisted/Vietnam who returned to active duty after personally obtaining the required graduate degree (no military scholarship/obligated payback).

First Post!!!

I did 8 years in the Marines, 4 active and 4 reserve.

Valentine's day, 1985, I stood on the yellow footprints of Parris Island. 3032
After Infantry Training School, My first duty station was Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. I opted to stay for two years.

Went to 1/8th Marines at Camp Geiger, NC in Aug. 1987. Eight months later, 8th Marines joined the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU).

After spending 8 months in the Mediterranean on and off the USS Harlan County, LST 1196, I came back Stateside and finished my active duty time.

My wife and I are both retired Air Force Master Sergeants and were in medical career fields. She retired in 1992 at just over 22 years of service and I retired in 1994 with 20 years and 29 days (not that I was counting!). Actually, I really enjoyed my time in the Air Force although the last several years were extremely challenging.

Enlisted US Army, 1969 - 1989.
Tanker, treadhead, except in 'Nam, where I took on the MP mission. And a nightmare turn in recruiting, something I . . . disliked . . greatly.
Fts Knox, Hood, Bliss, Hunter-Liggett (a school,) RVN in '71, Germany twice. My only trips to Korea were on leave to visit my in-laws.

I got to Great Lakes Dec. 15, 1966. Company 730. Visited There last fall. Things changed in 50 years. After boot stayed for Engineman A school. Then off to the Philippines for 18 months, then Mare Island, Ca. To learn how to work on PBR’S. Then off to Vietnam for a year. That was enough for me. Got out as an E-5.

Joined the Army active reserve in 1957 while still in high school. Served six months active duty after high school and then six years in the reserve in communications. Only regret is not going regular army. My Dad had a fit every time I mentioned it so I gave up on it to keep peace with him.
