When I arrived as an E-1, 18 years old, they still had the U-2, OV-10, O-2, A-7, DC-130A and DC-130E Drone Launchers, drones, and the A-10 was coming in to replace the A-7's. Great base, just visited last year. Took my Wife through the boneyard tour after security check and all the hoops. Told her we used to drive over there everyday to get parts for our A models, just walked out and took them. No security at all in those days.

Back in 80-81 I was an O-2A Nail FAC at DM. Actually delivered a few O-2s to the boneyard.

Sounds pretty much the same: arrived at DM at the ripe old age of 18, except by then the base only had A-10s and EC-130s, not to mention a couple of CBP HH-60s. We usually got our MICAP parts from the boneyard, but had to get authorization with the understanding that we'd resupply the part once ours came in through normal supply channels. Was much more efficient than just waiting for our parts to arrive on station.

Thumbs up The Few The Proud The Marines

I stepped on the yellow footprints at Parris Island Nov. 5, 1979 a day after the U.S. Embassy was seized in Iran. Needless to say, the drill instructors welcomed us with open arms. Served almost eight years on active duty, then I transitioned to the Reserve side and retired in 2002. Would not trade those life experiences for anything in the world.
