Mrs. Wicked and Toofer (the two-for-one bitch), took BOS at Yuma today! She beat a fabulous special (which I was showing ) and is well on her way to her championship. Three more days, so fingers crossed!

Ella took BOS and Toofer took Winners today in affens. It was cold, windy and starting to rain when I took the whippets into the ring. Claire took Reserve and the other two took class wins.
This show is "on the way" to Eukanuba and it's amazing how many #1 dogs in the US are here in a slew of breeds. I watched a couple of the groups and there was the dog that won the National Dog Show on NBC and a bunch of the competitors from that show. The #1 and #3 whippets are here and the only thing that I can see that's different with them are the professional handlers showing them.
I decided to have Tigg shown this coming weekend at Costa Mesa by one of the top pro handlers. It will be interesting to see how much difference it will make. I'll hand him over to the handler before we leave here on Monday so she can work with him for a few days. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I had to laugh at your sentence that the only difference you could see between the #1 and #3 dogs ( and I presume yours) is that they are handled by professional handlers.
When we first started out almost 30 years ago, none of the professional handlers would have anything to do with us and we weren't considered a "threat" because we rarely won. As our dogs became better in quality, it was amazing how we began to be accepted. After a number of years, we would win frequently, although not as much as the pros, depending on the judges. There were judges we quickly learned not to show to if there were pros there, as it made no difference how good your dog was.
Finally, we came to the realization that if we had a special dog, we could finish him/her, but if we wanted to special him/her for national recognition, it would have to go to a pro. To be honest, that was the beginning of the end of showing for us as it was VERY expensive and the fun wasn't there any more.
As you are aware, not all breeds require a pro to do extremely well, as a good owner/handler can succeed. However, in some breeds, your chances are much better with a pro. Too bad that for me it made me enjoy it so much less to the point that we quit showing altogether. We occasionally go to shows, but only to see old friends and to see the quality of the dogs being shown.

Golden:
All I can say is AMEN!
Whippets are one of those breeds with 100 entries being not that all unusual at larger shows. Your chances of winning in the whippet breed are pretty low, even if you have an entry that could take Eukanuba, that is, unless you hire a pro handler.
Today, my pup took Reserve and I was told with a pro handler he would have taken breed. I, like you, got into showing for fun, but it really sucks to have a great dog and get passed over because you don't have that little green lapel pin.
I will concede that my handling skills are probably at 90% of a pro. It's that 10% delta, show and breed politics and judges who would rather play it safe by judging the handler, rather than the dog, that leads to pro handlers dominating.
We added affenpinschers as a second breed and have been doing great with them (taken points every day here). However, we rarely are in the running for breed as one of the top pro handlers in the country shows the #1 affen (and #3 dog in the US) against us and we don't have a chance. (The guy who owns that dog is the founder of the Taser stun gun company).
We're having a pro handler show our whippet pup at Costa Mesa, beginning Friday. I'll show the other whippets against him and we'll hope that one of them can score some points. The entries at the show will be the top whippets in the country as it is only a couple days before the Eukanuba show in Long Beach. We decided not to show at Long Beach this year, but I guess we could have hired a pro for that show, too.
I was hoping to put all the points on the pup myself, but the reality is if I want him finished quickly I'm going to have to hire pros for at least some of the shows.

I totally understand!! In mastiffs you can finish one yourself but MUST have a handler and a top one to do really well! It was amazing with our BIS boy--he won that one and people were shocked because it was a handler but not a "big" one. Later we put him with a political handler who used to be a judge and he became #1!! I must say it was not fun and ALOT of money and I would never do it again as people are incredibly NASTY--they call judges to trash your dog, etc.
Ah yes the politics of the game.

Anyone else going to Eukanuba?
Hi, while none of my own dogs are showing, one of the pups out of a litter of mine is. I'm going over to have some fun, do some Christmas shopping and watch a few of the breeds we would like to own in the future show.
Anyone else going?

Hey all.. new irv2 member here from Columbus Ohio. We have 3 Afghans, only 2 being campaigned for now. Anyone heading up to the IX center in Cleveland for the Medina, Richland, Lorain and Western Reserve Kennel Club shows? See you there

Hey Karen!
We're probably the only ones here in Costa Mesa not going to Eukanuba. We didn't enjoy the show last year and decided to sit it out this year. I cosidered sending our 6-9 pup to the show, but wasn't sure he would be 100% after his injury. As it turns out he would have been fine.
Our next show will be Palm Springs (Indio), although I plan to spend 3 days in Riverside later this month lure coursing. Can you believe it...FREE parking for the RV at the LC event.

Who's heading to the Indio show this coming week? We will be there on Wednesday through Sunday. We're showing 2 affens and 2 whippets.

We are getting settled at the Palms Springs show in Indio. The toy speciality is tomorrow and Mrs. Wicked will be showing two affens. She's excited as there will be a major for bitches and she has a chance of finishing another affen at this show.
As for me, I'll be showing two whippets beginning on Friday. I think the economy has hit this show as there are only 70 whippet entries compared to 90+ last year.
Even though we are squeezed in like sardines in the RV parking area, it looks like a much smaller turnout from the number of units in the area getting electrical. At this show it's about $90 a night for parking. Scottsdale and some of the other California shows are as expensive.

Not much in the way of dog shows in the north as in the south this time of year. And we can not even use the motorhome this time of year. We hit the close shows in the winter with the van but thats no fun at all. Come on April and spring and then Newfy nationals.
