First and foremost, be sure he has a collar with contact information for the cell phones you have with you. In a strange place, he might panic if lost, and you want people to be able to get in touch with you. Even a tag with your site number written in Sharpie isn’t a bad idea.

Get a good long leash so he can comfortably explore while on walks. Be sure you have a bag dispenser on the leash so you don’t get caught without a bag.

Be very vigilant when he’s outside. Big dogs, coons etc. can be a threat and people often bring dogs camping that aren’t accustomed to having other people and dogs in close proximity. Keeping him in a pen may not be safe.

If you leave him alone in the RV, be sure he doesn’t bark and that you aren’t gone long. If the AC fails, it can be deadly because RVs heat up fast. Many parks have rules prohibiting unattended pets, and a barking dog will make you an unpopular neighbor.

Be a little more cautious with carrying enough food. His favorite may not be readily available where you are.

Be sure his shots are up to date and will stay up to date until you are back, and that you have health records from your vet. Some campgrounds and daycares require them, and if you need to seek treatment you may need them. If he takes medication, try to bring enough with you to last the trip.

one thing we found while traveling this past summer out west.national parks do not allow a dog on the trails inside those parks.so many popular trails in parks such as arches and yellowstone we could not hike with our dog.everywhere else was super dog friendly just not national parks.

MICROCHIP

Leash 6" of LESS
Not one of those retractables!
*ON leash required in CGs

Harness for travel ---don't want flying dog in emergency stop/accidents

Slideouts......never operate unless you KNOW where dog is

Up to date medical records/Rabies vaccine (ID Tag on collar)

Microchip is great, but it can take hours or days to connect with owners on the road by the time you find somebody to read it, track down info and get routed to a home land-line number. That’s where the collar info excels in getting your pet back in minutes.

Be aware that many parks and campgrounds restrict the length of the leash to 6 ft (or less). Some state parks don't allow the retractable leashes at all. I always carry a retractable leash (for exploring) and a sturdy 6 ft leash for restrictive areas. Also be aware that dogs are not allowed on most NP trails.
