The current PA State Park policy on Pets is that pets in overnight camping sites are prohibited except in desiganted parks and camp sites. This policy is wrong, outdated and unfair. I further believe the policy inhibits the public's use and enjoyment of PA State Parks.

The following is a C&P from our letter to our state represenatives and senator who supports my concern but seem unable to get DCNR and the Park managers to revise the policy. I have sent this to the PA State Parks Director with no response to date.

If you are a PA citizen and would like to enjoy the state parks with your pet, contact your representative and senator.

"My wife and I enjoy visiting state parks each camping season. However there are many State Parks that have rules prohibiting pets in camping areas. This rule prevents us from visiting many parks and enjoying the experience of the environment and nature in new areas.
We travel with a cat in a 35 foot motorhome. Our cat never leaves the coach and is always contained and controlled within the motorhome. We always abide by common sense rules regarding pets and are sensitive to fellow campers concerns regarding pets.
In all of our travels and camping in both state parks and private campgrounds across the country we have never had a bad experience caused by the presence of our cat. Our experience has been that most state parks in other states, welcome campers with pets.
In my view the DCNR pet rules applied to camping areas are discriminating. Even where pets are permitted, the camping sites are segregated from much of the area and are located in less favorable sites or an excess distance from available facilities. In some cases leashed pets are allowed only in designated walking paths. This certainly appears to be discrimination.
So I would suggest that the pet rules be amended to allow a pet to be present in a camping area if the pet is contained and controlled within the camping unit and site (tent, trailer, camper, motorhome, etc.) If the owner fails to properly control the pet and there are complaints to the park staff, the owner should vacate the site within a reasonable time.
I am sure the general public and my fellow PA citizens will appreciate your review and consideration on this matter."

Thanks for your interest and support.

I agree. Several years ago we were turned away from a pa. park so we decided never to give them another opportunity. Good post.

We are with flytyer 110%, let us know what we can do to help with this issue. I would love to enjoy more of my states resources, but we are stymied by the unfair PA dog regs. There for, I must continue spending my recreational dollars out of state, such a shame.

Well it took over a year, but I finally heard from the Director of PA State Parks. I actually received a phone call from him.

The conversation was very interesting and I was encouraged with what is being planned. The intent is open up all parks to pets, but it will take sometime to accomplish this. Each year pets will be allowed in more parks, but on limited sited. However, we should soon see all parks allowing pets on all camping sites.

I checked the 2007 PA Parks website and I see many fresh changes and additions of parks allowing pets.

So while slow to make change, it seems PA Parks are getting it done for pet owners.

Are they still allowing only 5 sites at each park for pets ? We can never get in any pet parks, all the sites are always taken.

I would expect to be dead before PA opens all sites at all parks to our beloved pets. I wonder how much of my taxes goes to keeping my dog outa the state parks ?

In it's simple form, this issue demonstrates how Gov't ignores the needs and will of its people. It is going to take a long time to get this where we want it.

I do not fully agree with PA Parks approach to allowing pets in the parks, but there is some improvement that cannot be overlooked.

Not all parks allow overnight pets in camping areas, but many have been added to the list that do. By checking the PA Parks website, I see that depending on the size of the park and the number of camping sites, the number of "pet" sights varies. Some parks have only a few sites, but then other larger parks allow 20 or more sites. I am happy to see that 2 or 3 of our favorite nearby parks now allow pets.

I appreciate those who have dogs and who would like to enjoy our parks, but are restricted or prevented becuase of the rules. For us it has been a bit different having a cat. We have figured how to keep our cat hiddden from easy view and we admittedly cheat. Only once did a park manager see our cat, but she choose to not confront us. We later learned she is a bit tolerant and tries to cooperate as long as there is no complaint.

Now here is a strange twist...I know of a park that has horse riding trails and encourages riding clubs to use them. Well because a horse is not defined a pet, but rather an farm animal, they are allowed to overnight in this particular park in a campsite !! Go figure...
