Screwworm Quarantine in the FL Keys

Just a heads up to anyone traveling to the Keys with their pets.

There has been an outbreak of screwworms in Big Pine Key and several nearby keys which have generally attacked our Key Deer (about 100 have been put down so far) and, from what is reported, about 4 local pets have also been put down.

If you bring your pet(s) to the Keys, as you LEAVE the Keys you will be required to stop at a checkpoint at MM106 (on Key Largo, right before you get to the bridge leading to Florida City) and have your pet(s) checked for screwworms. In the 2 or so weeks that they've been checking pets, they have found zero pets infected with screwworms.

A complicating factor is that the state of Georgia just instituted a restriction on any animals, including pets, coming from Florida. I spoke to the Asst. State Veterinarian of Georgia today and she said that pets traveling THROUGH Georgia should not have a problem providing they have a Health Certificate stating that their final destination is a state OTHER THAN Georgia. However if you live in Georgia, come with Rover to visit the Keys, and then want to return home to Georgia, you may have a problem and need a special permit to return with your pet since you traveled to a known screwworm infested area.

The link below with give you information from a Florida point of view:

With all the snowbirds, and their pets, heading to the FL Keys this season, this is VERY important news.

Serious indeed!

So is the check point in Largo on the honor system, or is every vehicle getting stopped. I can remember the sobriety checks on every third car goin north in Islamorada on Sunday nights. Whata circus that was.

The checkpoint is ONLY on the way OUT/North as you are LEAVING the Keys. Yes, it is on the honor system but you wouldn't want to be the a-hole who blows past the checkpoint with your pet and then infects half of your home state.

From a rancher/livestock standpoint, screwworm is a BIG deal.

Not to mention that IF your dog or cat is infected, and left untreated, kiss it good bye!

We went through the check point a few days ago. We had spent Oct just north of Big Pine Key which is "ground zero" for the screwworm problem. The Check point is very quick and consisted of a few questions asked by an office. If you are aware of the problem and your pet has no open wounds the stop takes just a couple of minutes. The check point has been in place for about 30 days and no pets have been discovered infected.

Steve.. old post i know, but we are headed back to BPK in May with the kitties. Is there an RV friendly pull over lane for the check or are they just using one of the traffic lanes?

The check point is outbound from the Keys only.

Lots of room to pull in to a parking area at the checkpoint.

Twinboat is correct. The checkpoint is small and inconspicuous. You will see it on the left as you make the sweeping right turn when you enter Key Largo. It's for northbound traffic only.

Large pull out area on the right as you leave the keys. Takes two minutes. Not a big deal

We plan a trip to the Keys in a couple months so thanks for the warning.. On trips under a week 2 of our dogs are left at home in an fenced in acre with plenty of food and water. dog houses have thick bed of cedar so no insects bother the food. Been doing this for 30 years. We have to take one with us because she is sickly and spoiled so other two may attack her if left un-supervised. Our dogs are medium to large breeds.
Dogs get infected often at dog parks. We try to find an off road woody area to let our dogs relieve themselves. Truck stops have been known to be infected with many pet disorders.

Last I read, no infected pets were detected at the stop, but they did find an infected, stray dog, up in Homestead. They think it was a dump job.

Now they are releasing sterile screwworms in that area.

Dogs doing fine.
