Question Campfire when solo

I'm wondering how many actually build a fire when they are solo. I find it sort of sad to build a fire and sit alone. I have made several solo journeys, but have not built a fire. I have even had the supplies to do so, but felt silly....

Do it, invite a neighbor over or not. Who cares, it’s your life and comfort. No reason to be cold just because you’re by yourself. I like going to movies alone, don’t have to be interrupted with questions.

I can't recall building a campfire for myself. Campfires are primarily a social thing for me. I enjoy sitting around a campfire talking to people, or enjoying a drink with friends, or roasting marshmallows with the kids, etc. I can also understand making one if you are tent camping and using it to cook food or keep warm on a cold night. I don't have a tent so none of those situations ever come up for me. I probably would make a fire if I was cold and had to be outdoors for whatever reason.

Build a roaring big fire and post on the bulletin board that cocktails are at five.have a good old time .maybe the next fire you wont be alone.just a crazy thought. But it might work out well.you never know.

I am a solo full timer. All my campfires I am alone. Never a problem. If I was inside I would still be alone.

I do not travel solo but sometimes my wife does not want to sit outside. I just go ahead and light a fire and sit by myself.

It is sad!

It is hard to do things that I did with my late wife especially for the first time. Part of the grieving process to get to the point where you can enjoy the good memories.

And happy too!

I recall a very scary solo campfire. I was in the navy and very focused on my career. What scared me was that I had forgotten who I was.

Wood fires can be a good way to find yourself.

I'm the same only it's the DH that doesn't want to sit outside long..especially if it's cold. I just pile on more firewood & enjoy it by myself.

Even when just burning the brush pile at home, by myself, I like to just pull up chair and watch the flames

I agree with you completely. I love a good wood fire just as much as the next guy. The smell and the crackle are mesmerizing. I just don't make them for myself. If you'd like to sit around the fire for a few hours, I'd be happy to gather wood and kindling make one for us to enjoy.

Perhaps I'm missing out on a great solo experience. After all, I love going out to eat or to the movies alone. I guess I'll try a campfire sometime.

You can only 'miss' something if you can not do it and enjoy doing it.

Eating out is not a solo experience. I would get depressed sometimes working away from the family living in an apartment without roommates. I would go to a noisy place like a sports bar and get a cheeseburger and onion rings. Cheaper than a therapist.

Same with going to a movie. My daughter a therapist was concerned about the traumatic nature of DW passing. She thought I should get out and be around people so she sent me a gift card to go to the movies. Of course loss of a spouse is often part of movie and TV drama. Since I was not retired from the CIA, I did not have any bad guys to kill to cope with loss.

Being solo in a RV provides plenty of alone time during the week so I joined a church group that met once a week. I would also go food shopping while in town. One week I could handle shopping and opted for cold cereal for dinner.

Some kayaker going down river showed and asked permission to stay at our private campground. I showed them the tent camping area near the common fire pit.

Scored beef stew heated over a wood fire and interesting fellowship.

The next night a group was down for a birthday party and invited me to dinner. Scored left overs for two dinners. I finally got to Walmart and ended up fixing burgers with beer for friends who just happened to not be with their wives. Scored ribs for dinner.

Score card: 3 campfire with people, two solo.

Colin Fletcher wrote in his book, "The Complete Walker" about a phrase in Swahili, poetically, Anahota moto—“He is dreaming the fire." It is where you sit and watch the flames and let your mind go where it will. Solo makes it a much better experience.
