    I can't speak to the Fleetwood Limited but Hawkins built their gas MH on either a John Deere or Oskosh chassis which are very solid platforms. Either engine, Ford 460/Chevrolet 454, are good but you have to inspect for cracked exhaust manifolds particularly on the 454 (common issue). Which ever coach you select have it thoroughly inspect, engine, transmission, suspension, all appliances and electrical switches and lighting. Good luck

    Thanks for the info about older, low mileage. So the diesel opportunity flaked out--but I still have the Hawkins bug. I am offered a Gas, 36 foot, 41k miles, 1989, 460 and a 1985, 36 foot, with 8k miles, and 454. Can you say something about these gas rigs? also Fleetwood Limited 1989 with about 120k miles, 36 foot gas? I like these both for solid wood interiors more likely to resist Mexican bugs on the Pacific Coast where I plan to us a coach for about ten years. My budget is about 8,000--new tires and preventive maintenance included--so its a small field. Other suggestions?

    Hawkins are a well built motorhome and the engine/tranny combination is great. The tranny is a 4spd automatic vs. todays 6spd autos but it does it's job well. My mpg varied between 6.5 and 10 mpg depending on terrain and if I was towing my trailered race car, which is about the same as todays motorhomes. I would have everything on this motorhome examined including the chassis, suspension, engine, transmission and body integrity. With the low mileage it has sat for long periods of time and seals will dry out, gaskets (everywhere) will dry and shrink, and body caulking can dry and pull away. I would also find out if the windshield can be replaced, check this shop out, RV Windshield Replacement | Recreational Vehicle Windshield Replacement and Repair | RV Glass Solutions . I would figure on a complete engine and tranny service and replacement of all the tires.

    I am looking at a 36 foot Hawkins with the same Catepillar/Allison combo you owned. Did you ever figure out your mpg? Needs half a windshield and I am wondering if I should check it out. 5,000 is the price. 34,000 miles. What should i be careful to check for? I have a former soninlaw who is a diesel mechanic in southern Cal--so I am not tood afraid of engine spruce up.
