I was reading the comment thread about GFI breakers...

Please don't take this as anything but a request for clarification... I'm a 2-way radio tech, not an electrician, but 15 years ago I was inbetween jobs and my dad asked me to help an electrician friend of his for a week and a half while he did the wiring changes on a remodel. I did it just for the education.

I was told that GFI's were required on any outlet that was within 6 feet of water, and that GFI breakers were used (not 'required") only on outlet circuits except refrigerators and freezers. Circuits that fed other breaker panels never got GFIs.
And I think I've seen GFI breakers in 30 and 50 amps amps, but I don't remember where.

    Is all of that correct?

And what is an AFCI? Why and where would it be used?

    Thanks in advance

    Mike
