We haven't done the Winchester to Fredericksburg on 50 leg, but we have done the I-81 Staunton to Richmond on I-64 using the 288 beltway on the west of Richmond that is well before the city traffic. The climb up the Blue Ridge on I-64 was reasonable in our 2004 Newmar Durch Star towing a 2013 Jeep Compass. We stayed in: Stony Creek Resort, Greenville VA a Passport America campground for a 2- or 3-day layover on our way south in 2000. We took the opportunity to run 100 miles of the Blue Ridge Highway going south off of I-64 a beautiful drive in our car. This also gave me an opportunity to see the climb on I-64 to the top. I just checked the Passport America website to get the info on Stony Creek. Current PA rates are $25- $32 per night.
Staunton VA is about 146 miles south of Hagerstown MD on I-81.
