    Hi Tom,
    Glad you made it back.
Again a couple of things. I seem to do things twice, don't I? Grin.
    Have you broken a needle?
What you describe suggests a timing issue.
Remove the needle plate and the presser foot.
Lower the needle using the handwheel until it hits dottom. At this point the hook should be approaching the needle. Keep turning the handwheel until the needle has risen about 3/32". At this point the hook should be just brushing the back of the needle and just below the eye.
To assist this many of the singers had double rings marked on the needle bar. To check for these at the lowest point these can be seen where the bar extends from the machine head guide bearing. Hope I'm making sense here.
Let me know what you find and we will proceed from there.
    Jeff

    Morning Tom guy.
Great to hear from you. As you say we are all bored. If I had known that retirement was like this I would have kept working. 😂
    Re your sewing machine.
First of all have you checked the basics? Is it threaded correctly? Is the needle in the correct way?
What makes you suspect the timing?
This may take a while so bare with me.
    Can you post some photographs?
You are correct about the quality of the Singer and other brands as well.
    Jeff
