Chassis Battery questions

I checked my chassis battery today for the first time since I left Lazydays at the first of the month. The water in all 6 cells was about halfway down. I got some distilled water and filled them up to the bottom of the plastic insert at the top, not all the way to the top. Then I started it and ran it long enough for everything to get warmed up so the solution in the cells would bubble and mix.

My questions are: why do you suppose the water level was so low? Is it good that that all cells were equally low? Did being low for a couple of weeks damage my battery?

I noticed a couple of times lately that the step didn't come out when I opened the door. After I ran the engine for awhile it worked fine. I assumed that was a low battery problem.

The idiot light on the dash has always indicated a little better than half charged and never gone to the top of the dial.

Would YOU get a new battery before you went camping?

Damage has been done if the acid was low enough to expose the plates, take it to some place that can check it to see how much. Idiot light are just that

As to why it is so low start with checking the charging system the same time they are checking the battery.

Sounds like a bad battery to me, take it out and get it load tested...the best way to test a battery. Most likely like the previous poster said damage has been done, one or more bad cells.

My guess is that the battery is damaged and probably best to just get a new one. Good Luck.:thumb:

You may have caught it in time.
I would put a stand alone battery charger on it to get full charge and see how that works out before going to remove it.
Dealers never check the basics I had a loose ground wire cable on mine when I got it and its still going strong since 2002.
Welcome to the irv2 and safe travels.
