Coolant Tank Sealer
 

I have some leakage in one of the overflow tubes coming out of my plastic coolant tank. The leak is between the brass fitting and the plastic tank. It looks like it had some kind of sealant and/or putty on it that has given way. Does anyone know what I should use to re-seal the fitting?

Ron,
The sealant or putty may have been a repair to a crack in the plastic where the fitting goes in. Look closely and make sure the tank is not cracked before you decide what to use to repair the leak.

I looked at it pretty close and it looks like it was used as a sealant or "pipe dope" between the brass fitting and the plastic tank. I don't see any signs of cracking.

I looked at the link for Rescue Tape and it looks pretty good... although I'm having trouble figuring how to wrap it between the fitting and the plastic tank.

And silicone thread tape doesn't work?

Just try pipe dope that has Teflon in it. Most hardware stores have it. That is made to do just what you are doing. Just don't OVER tighten it and crack it. Remember just tight enough to not leak, you are not stopping 1000 lbs of steam only 13 lbs of hot water.

Thanks guys! I wasn't sure if there was any problem with the heat... but I'll give it try. I'm always impressed with how quickly you get great advice on this forum!
