1997 Jeep 5 speed, what gear to tow in ??

First off I have never towed anything behind the motor home.

Second, I do not have the owners manual to the used Jeep I purchased.

The Jeep is a 1997 Jeep Wrangler SE (tj) 5 speed transmission VIN # 1J4FY29P0VP537532.

I know the transfer case needs to be in neutral but I have read threads on placing the transmission in third or fourth gear.

Why not place the transmission in neutral also?

The steering does not lock with the switch in off position so I am good there.

Any feed back is appreciated.

I tow an 03 Rubicon with auto trans. Transfer case in neutral and Trans in park. My guess would be that the manual transmission should be in gear so that the transmission does not have even the slightest opportunity to spin. In any vehicle it comes down to how the transmission or transfer case gets it's lube. Some devices lube from the input shaft and some lube from the output shaft. When being towed with the unit in neutral, the output shaft is turning and the input shaft is stationary. If the input shaft is what lubricates the unit, then you have a problem (or a pile of parts on the freeway). That is why I would guess that they want the transmission to be in gear, so that it doesn't turn.

I put mine in 5th gear.

Yup, in gear to ensure nothing is spinning while not properly lubricated. Any gear will do on a manual transmission, park for an automatic transmission.

Jeep wranglers make a great toad. Enjoy!

Yep, put the transfer case in neutral and the stick trans in gear to keep the gears from rotating.
We had a '97 GC auto with full time 4 wheel drive, transfer in neutral and trans in park.

I was told by a jeep mechanic to put it in forth gear. Why? I have no idea, but so far it's worked great.

Thank all of you for the input. So in-gear it is and fourth will be the gear, transfer case in neutral.

Thanks for sharing, Happy New Year!
